On this day in hockey history… 1935 — Tiny Thompson stopped Montreal Maroons Russ Blinco and Earl Robinson in penalty shots, during a 4-3 Bruins win at Boston Garden. The second shot was awarded when Bruins’ Nels Stewart began skating around during the first shot. 1966 — Detroit’s Roger Crozier recorded his 15th career shutout as the Red Wings won 3-0 at Montreal. The Wings had to wear the jerseys of their junior team in Hamilton as their NHL jerseys had been stolen from the Forum locker room the night before. 1987 — A snowstorm in New Jersey delayed the game between the Devils and Flames for two hours. When it finally started, only 334 fans were on hand to see the Devils beat the Flames 7-5. The game ended at 11:44 PM. |

► Practice
- Carey Price was on the ice again prior to practice working with athletic therapist Graham Rynbend. He continues to skate without equipment. As announced by Marc Bergevin, Habs fans can expect Price to be out about another month.
- Mike Condon is expected to get the start in goal against the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

► Byron to the IR
- After failing to finish Tuesday night’s frenetic game against the Boston Bruins, the Canadiens have placed Paul Byron on the Injured Reserve.
- As is in ordinance with seemingly the majority of decisions made by the Canadiens this season, no details were given on the status or details of the injury.
- The amorphous injury that plagues the Canadiens’ sixth highest goal scorer partially derails a career season for the diminutive forward, he has a career-high eight goals in 35 games in Montreal.
- Byron, who found himself in Montreal via the waiver system, has spent time on every line this season, playing with Pacioretty, Plekanec, Eller and Galchenyuk among others, due to injury.
- Had the Canadiens penalty kill specialist have played an entire 82-game schedule at this pace, he would have scored 18 goals, a number that would’ve been fifth on the Canadiens last season.
► Bartley demoted, then injured
- After ending up in Montreal in one of the most potentially duplicitous transactions of the season, the Canadiens have sent Victor Bartley to the AHL.
- The 27-year old insurance policy will join a St. John’s defensive core with both Brett Lernout and Morgan Ellis having breakout seasons, more so the ladder.
- The recently acquired blueliner failed to take part in any games with the Habs however did watch the team fail to win in either game he was in the building.
- Bartley, who describes himself as both a good skater and has the ability to be physical, had one goal and 23 points in 112 career games, all of which with Nashville.
- The defenceman’s demotion has led to speculation on whether Tom Gilbert will be returning earlier than expected, however nothing has happened yet.
- In his first game with the IceCaps against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday, Bartley was injured in the second period.

► Therrien blaming no one
- The allegorical punching bag that is Michel Therrien took it upon himself to stand up for his players following Tuesday night’s loss to the Bruins.
- Throughout the lamenting Canadiens lineup, there is widespread lack of scoring, but it’s not due to a lack of trying according to the coach “I’ve had enough that people are criticizing those guys. Because, you know what, their work ethic is outstanding. Again tonight.”
- However he did point out his job “The only thing that I can ask is to play them in a structure that’s going to allow them to get scoring chances and get pucks at the net and to play solid defensively.”
- “Execution … is it there all the time? Probably not … probably not,” he said of his group of china dolls. “Like all teams and all players … but those guys don’t deserve to get criticized for their effort. They don’t deserve to get criticized.”

► Pacioretty in support of Therrien
- Despite the team descending out of a playoff spot Captain Max Pacioretty still has unwavering support of head coach Michel Therrien.
- The team has undoubtedly begun to raise their level of play however the results haven’t been there, however Therrien has “He’s been absolutely phenomenal during this (slump) and that’s what makes it so hard. I can’t believe how well he’s handled this and how positive he’s been with us.”
- He points the finger at the team, not its bellwether ” […] Night after night we haven’t been able to step up for him and that’s frustrating because we all believe in this room. […] We all know that this is the way the game is supposed to be played.”
- The difference between the beginning of the season and now is apparent “The execution was there earlier in the year, it’s been there for a lot of these games, just we haven’t gotten the results we want.”
► Ward to IR
- The Carolina Hurricanes have lost starter Cam Ward for an undetermined amount of time following placing him on the Injured Reserve yesterday.
- Nobody on the ‘Canes knew, or said publicly, how the 31-year old backstop sustained the concussion however his last start was on Friday against Vancouver.
- Despite his mediocre .905 save percentage Ward has a 2.42 Goals against average on a Carolina Hurricanes team precipitously in a playoff hunt with the Canadiens.
- The $6.7 million man now relinquishes his spot to Eddie Lack who has an .891 save percentage and a 2.97 goals against average in 18 games this season.
- “Obviously it’s gotten worse as it’s went along. Hopefully it’s not a long-term thing.” said Carolina head coach Bill Peters.
► Miller out long-term
- The Detroit Red Wings forward Drew Miller’s season is all but over after being said to be out for the next four to six months following reconstructive surgery on his left ACL.
- Miller, who had injury trouble prior to missing the next four-six months due to surgery, playing a grand total of 28 games in which he’s scored a lone goal and lone assist with a minus-five rating.
- The defensive presence upfront will have his spot taken by the likes of Tomas Jurco, Justin Abdelkader and Dylan Larkin according to Wings head coach Jeff Blashill.
- “He’s an elite penalty killer, there’s no question. That doesn’t mean that our penalty kill can’t do a great job. We’ve got guys, we’ve been using […],”said the coach “We’re going to have to find a mix of guys that can get it done.
► Kronwall out 2-4 weeks
- Following the loss of Drew Miller, the Detroit Red Wings have lost another important member of their defensive conspicuousness with Niklas Kronwall out for the next two to four weeks.
- The Swedish blueliner is having a relative down year offensively (17 points in 45 games) despite the team’s acquisition of Mike Green who is spending the majority of his time playing with Brendan Smith on the team’s second pairing.
- According to ‘Wings relatively newly minted head coach Jeff Blashill, this decision was in the works for some time. We utilized the All-Star break in that time period to try to minimize the games that he misses.”
