All Habs Headlines: Monday February 26, 2018

On this day in hockey history

2002 — Team Canada won the 2002 Olympic Gold Medal in Hockey by beating Team U.S.A. 5-2 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Joe Sakic led the scoring with two goals and two assists.

1982 — Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky beat Don Edwards for his 77th goal of the season, to break the NHL record of 76 held by Phil Esposito.

Injury update

  • Ales Hemsky – concussion (indefinite), skating on his own

Pleky a Leaf

  • On Sunday, the Canadiens announced that veteran centre Tomas Plekanec had been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. 
  • The Habs received defenceman Rinat Valiev, forward Kerby Rychel and a second round pick in 2018 for Plekanec and forward Kyle Baun.
  • Plekanec is just 19 games short of 1000 NHL career games. The Leafs have 18 games remaining this season.

Jerabek looking to play more

  • Defenceman Jakub Jerabek was traded to the Washington Capitals for a fifth-round pick on Wednesday.
  • Jerabek has not played in Montreal since February 1st, playing just 25 games for the Canadiens. Regarding sitting in the press box, Jerabek said, “It was my first experience with this situation. In the first two weeks, I didn’t know what was going on because the coaches just told me that I played well, but they were just making some competition between the [defensemen], so I had to wait for my next chance. It was hard. But now I’m happy that I’m here.”

Juulsen debut

  • Canadiens defenceman Noah Juulsen now has two NHL games under his belt after making his NHL debut vs the New York Rangers on Thursday night and then facing the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
  • Juulsen provided strong, physical two-way play in a top four role being paired with veteran Karl Alzner.

Habs goaltending depth

Bouillon rink

  • The Francis Bouillon arena was christened in honor of the former Habs defenceman.

Shut down

  • Shea Weber visited a foot specialist in Green Bay and will require surgery to repair tendon damage. Weber has been shut down for the remainder of the season and is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp next season.

St. Cloud 9

  • St. Cloud State led by Ryan Poehling has been named the top NCAA Division 1 hockey program.

Release the Kraken!

  • Seattle will begin a ticket sales drive in their bid for NHL expansion.
  • A popular possible name for the franchise to be voted upon by fans is the Kraken.
