► Canadiens development camp
- The Canadiens development camp opens Sunday and continues through July 9 at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard.
- Grant McCagg, head scout for McKeen’s reports that Habs prospect Mike McCarron has grown in the past year and is now over 6-foot-6.

► Andrei Kostitsyn
- As we reported several weeks ago. former Canadiens forward Andrei Kostitsyn is eyeing a return to the NHL. With the free agency period underway, is there a team ready to take a chance on the 30-year-old Kostitsyn? According to his agent, Andrei is willing to sign a cap-friendly, one-year deal.
- Could Kostitsyn be the answer for the Canadiens who are tight against the cap and yet have a large hole on the right side ready-made for a scoring winger like him?
- Speaking to Sportsnet, Kostitsyn said, “I’m ready. I want to say when I come there again I’ll be excited like it’s the first time. I’m doing my best — training hard and working hard. I’ll try to score lots of goals like I know I can.”
- Former NHL coach Dave Lewis was behind the bench for Belarus at the World Hockey Championship where Kostitsyn recorded nine points in seven games. Lewis said, “Everything we asked him to do he did. There was some, I guess, trepidation when I first got there. I’d heard a lot of different things about his past, but to me he came really motivated and focused.”
► Vejdemo to Lake Placid
- In the third round of the 2015 Draft, with the 87th pick overall, the Canadiens selected Lukas Vejdemo from Djurgarden in the Swedish Jr. league.
- The 6-foot-2 centre was named to the Team Sweden U20 squad that will be heading to Lake Placid in August for the National Junior Evaluation Camp.
- All Habs Hockey Magazine will be on location for the third consecutive year to bring you prospect coverage.
► Celebrating the 4th of July
- With several players on the Canadiens roster hail from the United States — Brian Flynn, Alex Galchenyuk, Jeff Petry, Max Pacioretty, Jarred Tinordi, Tom Gilbert, Greg Pateryn — it’s safe to say that each was celebrating Independence Day over the weekend.
- Jeff Petry treated his guests to a 17-pound barbequed brisket, burnt ends, ribs and chicken.
► IceCaps sign Pasquale
- Marc Bergevin signed goaltender Eddie Pasquale to a one-year AHL contract for the St. John’s IceCaps.
- The move caused a bit of a stir on social media with fans sensing a move in the works. Pasquale, Mike Condon and Zach Fucale are presently slated to tend goal for the IceCaps.
- The signing could simply be a depth move with Pasquale returning to action after sitting out the entire 2014-15 season rehabbing from hip surgery but the logjam in the crease is noteworthy.
- 22-year-old Franky Palazzese who appeared in 41 games for the ECHL Wheeling Nailers last season does not appear to be part of the Canadiens goaltending plan. Palazzese was recalled by the Hamilton Bulldogs in March but did not see any action.
► Galchenyuk extension coming?
- TSN’s Aaron Ward expects that a deal will get done this upcoming week for Alex Galchenyuk. It has been widely-reported that the Canadiens are offering a two-year bridge contract. P.K. Subban, Carey Price and Max Pacioretty each followed that contract progression.
- Reportedly this isn’t sitting well with the Galchenyuk family. What they have in mind is more along the lines of the six-year deal that Brendan Gallagher signed last year. According to Jonathan Bernier of Journal de Montreal, this is the issue that led to Galchenyuk splitting with his agent Igor Larionov.
- Bernier speculates that the influence of the Galchenyuk family, in particular Alex’s father, may be the source of strained relations with Larionov and the reason there is not already a signed contract.
► Mic’d up at the Draft
- Nashville Predators GM David Poile agreed to wear a microphone during the 2015 NHL Entry Draft for Preds TV and the video result provides some insight into what happens on the draft floor.
- The Predators selected three players from the QMJHL in this year’s draft: Iakov Trenin from Gatineau (2nd round, 55th overall), Anthony Richard from Val D’Or (4th round, 100th overall) and Alexandre Carrier from Gatineau (4th round, 115th overall.)
► NHL signings (by Chris Nardella)
- After being acquired on Tuesday from the Chicago Blackhawks, Brandon Saad has signed a six year contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets worth $36 million. Saad was acquired for Marko Dano, Corey Tropp, Artem Anisimov, Jeremy Morin and a 2016 4th round pick. Saad will likely take on a larger role in Columbus while insulated on the left side by captain Nick Foligno and Matt Calvert.
- After years of battling with the Colorado Avalanche for a long term contract extension, the 24-year-old reached an agreement with the Buffalo Sabres. O’Reilly signed a seven-year $52.5 million contract that will pay him $7.5 million annually. The 6-foot-0 forward was acquired at the draft in exchanged for former first round picks Nikita Zadorov and Mikhail Grigorenko along with J.T. Compher and the 31st overall pick. O’Reilly will slot in right on top of Evander Kane and Matt Moulson to form one of the best left sides in the NHL.
- The San Jose Sharks and free agent forward Joel Ward have reached an agreement that will pay the 34 year old $3.25 million annually for the next 3 years. Ward has spent the last 4 years in Washington, missing only 15 games. Ward has played 517 career NHL games and has 220 points to go along with his 57 career playoff games in which he has scored 14 goals and had 35 points.
- Connor McDavid signed his entry level contract which is for three years at a maximum of $925,000 as a base salary, but if he reaches all of his bonuses he could be paid up to $3.775 million annually. McDavid already signed a contract with CCM that will pay him $1 million. On signing, McDavid said, “When would you ever get tired of signing your first NHL deal? That’s something that you dream of, so I’m just trying to enjoy myself.”
- The Anaheim Ducks have decided to give veteran Shawn Horcoff a chance to reestablish himself as an NHLer. Horcoff was with the Dallas Stars for the last two years and has put up solid numbers in a very limited role as the team’s fourth line centre. He had 49 points in 153 games.
