On this day in hockey history

1991— Vince Damphousse scored four goals in an 11-5 Campbell Conference win over the Wales at the NHL All Star Game in Chicago. Wayne Gretzky scored to become the all-time leader in All Star Game Goals (breaking Gordie Howe’s record of 10 goals).

1996— NHL Board of Governors approved the sale of the Winnipeg Jets, officially clearing the way for the team to move to Phoenix, Arizona in time for the 1996-97 season.

  • Ales Hemsky wore a non-contact jersey in practice.
  • Shea Weber has a lower-body injury.
  • Phillip Danault has concussion symptoms.

Farewell to Red

Price, Mete untouchable?

  • When discussing Marc Bergevin’s approach at the trade deadline, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said “And look, who’s untouchable on this team? Probably Price, probably Victor Mete. After that, you know, who’s untouchable?”
  • Friedman added that Bergevin is active on the phone with other teams.

Shaw squared

  • Glace Bay Nova Scotia native Logan Shaw was claimed off waivers by the Canadiens  from Anaheim.
  • Andrew Shaw suffered a lower body injury early in the Saturday night game vs Boston in Montreal.
  • He will be re-evaluated 7 to 10 days after the date he was placed on the injured reserve list.

Danault struck

  • Phillip Danault suffered a concussion after receiving an errant Zdeno Chara slap shot to the side of the head.
  • Danault spent the night in the hospital for observation but was released.

Willie O’Ree night

  • On Wednesday, the city of Boston declared January 17th as Willie O’Ree day.
  • Fredericton New Brunswick native O’Ree was a pioneer becoming the NHL’s first black player when he dressed for the Bruins in a 1958 game versus the Montreal Canadiens on January 18, 1958.

Hobey Baker dreams

  • Canadiens Center prospect Jake Evans is named as a finalist for the Hobey Baker award as the NCAA most valuable player.
  • Evans, a Habs 2014 7th round selection, leads the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with 28 points in 22 games played.

88 to the rafters

  • On January 17th, the Philadelphia Flyers retired the number 88 in honour of Eric Lindros.
  • The 1995 Hart Trophy winner and six time all-star is widely recognized as one of the greatest Flyers of all time.

Warm Welcome

  • Claude Julien returned to Boston for the first time since he was fired as the Bruins head coach. It is a position that he held for a decade while winning a Stanley Cup.
  • Julien received a touching tribute, then the Bruins went on to dominate his Canadiens in a 4-1 Habs loss.
