On this day in hockey history… 1979 — Boston officially retired Bobby Orr’s uniform #4 during a ceremony preceding an exhibition game between Bruins and Soviet Wings at Boston Garden. 1992 — Chicago’s 27-year-old rookie goalie Dominik Hasek recorded his first career NHL shutout, to lead the Blackhawks to a 2-0 win against the Maple Leafs, at Chicago Stadium. 1998 — Dale Hunter had up three assists to give him 1,000 career NHL points. The milestone came in a Capitals’ 4-1 win over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. Hunter became the first NHL player to collect 1,000 points and 3,000 career penalty minutes. |

► Friberg Montreal St. John’s bound
- In an ostentatious maneuver from Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin the Habs have acquired Max Friberg from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Dustin Tokarski.
- Tokarski had been consigned to the AHL for the third time this season exept on this occasion is was due totally to the team’s acquisition of veteran backstop Ben Scrivens.
- Friberg, has only played six games in the NHL in his career, and has yet to record a point but has been insidiously resplendent in his pro career, recording 37 goals and 97 points in 157 games in the AHL.
- Tokarski, once the team’s backup goaltender for the forceable future, with Zach Fucale behind him, faults red mightily this season with the multiple demotions preceded by unparalleled mediocrity in the pre-season and improved performances when back in the NHL.
- Tokarski had a .878 save percentage and a 3.19 goals against average in the NHL this season.
► Byron’s found his spot
- Coming off garnering a second star in the Canadiens’ 2-1 win against the New Jersey Devils, Paul Byron spoke to reporters and told them how he didn’t end up as a penultimate and in the NHL.
- The Canadiens swiped Byron off waivers days prior to the beginning of the 2015-16 season and have received his ability at in its greatest form.
- “Darcy Regier once told me in Buffalo that you need a niche to make a spot in the NHL,” he told the media “And I think the PK is definitely my niche and something I excel at.”
- Through 30 games with the Canadiens, the diminutive forward has already matched his career-high in goals and, for the first time at any level, he has more goals than assists.
► Barberio and McCarron all-stars
- Michael McCarron and Marc Barberio have had virtuous inaugural seasons in the Canadiens organization, and they have been rewarded for their efforts.
- Both the players were elected to represent the North Atlantic division and the St. John’s Ice Caps.
- In McCarron’s first season of professional hockey he’s been sumptuous garnering a call-up to the Canadiens. In 31 games he’s had 13 goals, 25 points and 50 penalty minutes.
- Barberio, who is currently in the NHL and won’t be attending the event, has a pair of goals and 20 points in 28 games. The 25-year old previously spent the previous six seasons in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization.
- Other notable admissions to the event are Derek Pouliot, William Nylander, Hunter Shinkaruk, Kirby Rychel and Peter Budaj.
► Jerseys unveiled
- Nashville’s choice for the jerseys for the all-star game was met with vast equanimity throughout the hockey world, a welcome response relative to 2014-15.
- Despite the aforementioned equanimity, there are still pernicious difficulties with the actual number of uniforms they made.
- This year’s format has the players divided in their divisions, of which there are four, but the NHL only created a pair of uniform variations.
- The uniforms don’t look atrocious however one would question if they’re for an all-star game in Pensilvania rather than the music city, as the jerseys looks eerily similar to those of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
► Ehlers fined for diving
- Winnipeg Jets remunerable rookie Nikolaj Ehlers has found himself in a tad of trouble as he’s been fined $2,000 for embellishment.
- This is the Scandinavian’s second offence, hence the fine. The original dive on November 21st against the Arizona Coyotes garnered a warning from the league.
- He was a reprimanded for a second time for a dive on December 29th against the Detroit Red Wings.
- In his first NHL season he has yet to find the ascendancy he so seemingly simply showed every night with the Halifax Mooseheads.
- In 40 games with the Winnipeg Jets the former ninth overall pick in 2014 has six goals and seven assists with a plus-1 rating.
► Konecny traded
- In the midst of a far too regulatory atrocious season, the Ottawa 67’s have dealt their captain Travis Konecny and assistant captain Sam Studnicka to the Sarnia Sting in exchange for Sasha Chmelevski, Chase Campbell, three second-round picks, three third-round picks and a pair of fifth round picks.
- Konecny was not only Ottawa’s captain but also the team’s second leading scorer with 45 points in 29 games in the nation’s capital.
- Studnicka was the team’s third leading scorer with 26 points in 31 games, one more than Habs prospect Jeremiah Addison.
- Konecny joins a redoubtable Sarnia Sting squad with the likes of Pavel Zacha (drafted in the first round by the Devils in 2015), Nikita Korostelev (Toronto), Matt Mistele (Kings) and Jakob Chychrun.
- The Philadelphia Flyers farmhand was caught off guard by the move “To be honest, I felt kind of blindsided. I never expected (a trade) when I went to world juniors, so, yeah, it was a heartbreaker to be told.” he told the Ottawa Citizen
