On this day in hockey history… 1964 — Chicago’s rookie Phil Esposito scored his first career NHL goal. It came against Detroit’s Terry Sawchuk as the Black Hawks lost 5-3 to the Red Wings. 1975 — New York Islanders defenseman Denis Potvin scored his first career NHL hat trick, and added an assist, in a 5-5 tie against the L.A. Kings. 1991 — Brett Hull scored twice, to give him 50 goals in 49 games, becoming the third player in NHL history to get 50 goals in less than 50 games, in a 9-4 Blues’ win at Detroit. |

► Game Day!
- Carey Price was on the ice again prior to practice working with athletic therapist Graham Rynbend. He continues to skate without equipment. As announced by Marc Bergevin, Habs fans can expect Price to be out about another month.
- Mike Condon is expected to get the start in goal against the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

► Galchenyuk Not Going Anywhere
- With a pair of domestic disputes in his rear view mirror, the Canadiens are still unwilling to par with latent forward Alex Galchenyuk, contrary to reports.
- On Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox’ Saturday night “Headlines” segment, Friedman touched on the point that teams were calling the Habs to inquire on the former third overall pick, but to no avail.
- “A couple of teams reached out to the Canadiens to see if [Galchenyuk] would be available after everything that happened in the last week and the word was no, he was not,” said the Sportsnet insider.
- Galchenyuk is currently on pace for the exact same insidious point total as last season at 46, however he is on pace for 17 goals which is three less than 2014-15.
► Subban Looking Ahead
- The lone allegorical fire left burning for the Canadiens at some points in the season P.K. Subban has stayed consistent despite his team’s putrid play over the last couple months, but he too isn’t looking in the past.
- In the pre-game media scrum in preparation for Saturday night’s matchup between the Leafs and Habs, P.K. Subban said something levelheaded.
- “An old saying, ‘If you look in the rear-view mirror you don’t see what’s coming ahead,’ there’s a lot of hockey left to be played.”
- During this brutal losing streak Subban has stayed productive, he has 33 points in 48 games, a plus-7 rating and the most turnovers in the NHL.
► Gallagher Breaks Down the Divisional Round
- Brendan Gallagher, who is a well documented football fan, wrote his second piece for NHL.com this past week breaking down the Divisional Round in the NFL playoffs.
- The pugnacious forward chose Tom Brady’s New England Patriots and the Carson Palmer led Arizona Cardinals.
- “[…] Despite going up against the Broncos’ top-ranked defense and having to play on the road, the Patriots will find a way to manage the game and move on to their second straight Super Bowl. […]” the Albertonian said on the AFC matchup.
- “[…] I think Arizona will be able to find a way to carry that momentum into this week and win a road game against the NFL’s top team [Carolina] […]”
► Oh How I Miss You So
- Although now residing in a place where Eastern Conference fans struggle to watch him on a regular basis, Milan Lucic regardlessly remains under the spotlight.
- In a tilt against the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night, the Kings forward sucker punched newly-minted Coyotes defenceman Kevin Connauton.
- The sequence was initiated when Connauton slashed the vexing powder keg on the wrist earlier on in the play which angered the behemoth.
- Lucic also had some choice words for referee Brad Meier following the game “I think this is the fourth time he’s kicked me out of a game. It’s always the same thing with him. Guys can take liberties on me and it’s not a penalty. If I do something, then I’m automatically kicked out of the game.” he complained.
► Bob Down
- In a season so filled with superfluous insufficiencies, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ propensity for the mediocre has shone through again.
- The Jackets will be without goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky for an undetermined amount of time following an injury to his groin in a game against the Calgary Flames Thursday night.
- This will be his third stint not being in the lineup this season as his preceding injury had him miss 17 games after injuring his groin for the second time.
- In a state of at least partial depletion, John Tortorella had this to say, “I’m not going to get into speculating on [Bobrovsky]. I’m not a doctor. There’s no sense in me discussing it.”
- Through 27 games this season the Russian backstop has a 11-13-3 record accompanied by a .911 save percentage and a 2.65 goals against average.
- Anton Forsberg was recalled to take his spot on the roster.
► A real All-Star game
- It was a crazy night in the KHL with the all-star game, primarily that a stick was literally in flames.
- Im one of the coolest shootout attempts I’ve ever seen, former Edmonton Oilers farmhand Linus Omark, who is widely recognized as redoubtable in the shootouts, lit his stick on fire and attempted to score, but failed.
- He had his stick wrapped in a flammable material and had the equipment manager light it on first before he proceeded to be stopped.
- Also in that game, two time NHL escapee Alexander Radulov was forced to go goalie after his team was forced to stop a penalty shot and he went in nets.
- He did have goalie equipment however, wearing the goaltender’s helmet, blocker and catcher.
- Now, there’s no video of that however would that ever be a spectacle.
