► Galchenyuk is signed.. finally!

  • With rumors of a break in talks between Marc Bergevin and the Galchenyuk camp appearing early this week, Habs fans were getting a little concerned just a couple of days away from August. Agent Pat Brisson has been onboard for the past month after a split citing irreconcilable differences with the Ian Pulver / Igor Larionov team and whispers about the negative influence of Galchenyuk’s family in the process.
  • The Canadiens came to an agreement on a two-year bridge deal with Alex Galchenyuk on Thursday afternoon.
  • “We are very pleased to have reached a two-year agreement with Alex Galchenyuk. Alex is a young forward constantly improving and who has contributed to the success of the Club since joining the NHL three seasons ago. Despite his young age, he has gained valuable experience through 193 regular-season games and 22 playoff contests. He shows maturity and fits in well within our young players development philosophy. Alex is an integral part of our core of forwards and we are confident in his ability to continue to improve his game.” — GM Marc Bergevin.
  • Galchenyuk gets a raise from the $1.35 million that he received in 2014-15. He will receive $2.5 million in 2015-16 and $3.1 million in 2016-17 for an average annual value $2.8 million.
  • The signing leaves GM Bergevin with just over $2.8 million in cap space to start the season.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

  • P.K. Subban has been quietly working out this summer in Toronto with former Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson according to a report from TSN.
  • Johnson told TSN, “We started working together three times a week, but we’ve gone down to two a week. I don’t want to overload his muscles. He’s doing strength and acceleration and some agility. He’s going to be even better, even faster next year.”
  • According to Johnson most of the workouts take place on the track saying, “Running is a fundamental. If you can’t run, you can’t play the game, even if it’s on the ice.”

Price to Toronto

  • Twitter was an uncomfortable place for Habs fans on Thursday as tweets flowed about Price heading to Toronto. It was a major MLB trade in which the Detroit Tigers sent left-handed pitcher David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays for a trio of young left-handers with the trade deadline looming on Friday.
  • Even P.K. Subban had something to say about the trade.

► Baruchel: Roy should be Habs coach

  • In an interview by Sportsnet on the set of Jay Baruchel’s upcoming movie Goon: Last of the Enforcers, the actor/film-maker/Habs fan said, “Personally, I’m not in love with our head coach. As far as I’m concerned, Patrick Roy should be our head coach, and that’s who I thought it was going to be the first time. So when we didn’t go the distance in the playoffs, I thought that might open the door for that. It didn’t.”
  • Baruchel also weighed in on the topic of the Canadiens captain saying, “That’s a damn good question. If I could pick anyone on that team, I’d go [Max] Pacioretty, Carey Price… or, to be honest, if he was a few years older, I’d say Brendan Gallagher.”

Lucky 13 for Semin

  • The Canadiens announced that newly signed free agent Alexander Semin will wear No. 13 this season.  Semin had worn No. 28 with the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals but that number is currently been worn by Habs defenceman Nathan Beaulieu.
  • The last player to wear No. 13 for the Canadiens was another sniper, Mike Cammalleri.

► Christmas in July

  • A new set of gear was waiting in the locker of Canadiens prospect Hayden Hawkey. Hawkey will be in goal for the Providence (College) Friars of Hockey East in NCAA.

► Scherbak gets focused

  • A great photo of Nikita Scherbak from photographer Chris Mast of the Everett Silvertips.
