On this day in hockey history… 1975 — Pittsburgh’s rookie defenseman Colin Campbell scored the first goal of his NHL career, in a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals, in Landover, Maryland. 1991 — Vince Damphousse scored 4 goals in an 11-5 Campbell Conference win over the Wales at the NHL All Star Game in Chicago. Wayne Gretzky scored to become the all-time leader in All Star Game Goals (breaking Gordie Howe’s record of 10 goals). 1996 — NHL Board of Governors approved the sale of the Winnipeg Jets, officially clearing the way for the team to move to Phoenix, Arizona in time for the 1996-97 season. |

► Mad Max
- Through the decrepit stretch of hockey that’s been the Canadiens’ horrific decent from contender to playoff hopeful, Max Pacioretty hasn’t been quiet, especially after the majority of losses.
- Following yet another game classified as a moral victory against the Blues, Pacioretty spoke his mind following the loss “We have to win that game. Just sitting here thinking what to say, there’s nothing other than we have to win that game. Up 3-2 with six minutes left, we cannot lose that game,” said the Habs captain.
- “Good teams win that game. Average teams win that game,” he told the media in his post game scrum. “We have to be a good team, and we have to be a good team quickly and find ways to win games.”
- The American, who is currently on a bit of a tear finding the back of the net in four out of his last five road games, has 19 goals this season and is on pace for 34.
► Gilbert out another two weeks
- By no means the be all end all, Canadiens defenceman Tom Gilbert should be ready to get the call come two weeks, according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
- Gilbert originally went down with an amorphous lower-body injury more than three weeks ago in a game against the Minnesota Wild and was said to miss the next four games however that’s obviously not the case 25 days later.
- Prior to going down with an injury, the Albertonian blueliner had a lone assist in 26 games however his role is very much not dependant on putting up points.
- In Gilbert’s absence, Marc Barberio was promoted to the team’s third pair with Nathan Beaulieu over the previously proffered Greg Pateryn.
- As a good tidbit to throw out at a party, in last year’s playoffs Gilbert had more goals and points than Alex Galchenyuk, Tomas Plekanec, David Desharnais, Lars Eller, had more goals than P.K. Subban and had the same amount of points as Brendan Gallagher.
► Tinordi exited with the move to the desert
- The latent Jared Tinordi that Canadiens fans barely knew for his on-ice production has found himself a new home in Scottsdale, a place he will look to finally establish himself in the NHL.
- “Im definitely excited about this opportunity,” said Tinordi. ” I end up with a young team and I was able to speak with Don Maloney who wants to see this group grow together.”
- The 6-foot-6-inch defenceman reflected on his time in Montreal. “Things were not going well for me this year. The Canadiens were on fairly deep on defense and the coaches couldn’t find me a place in training camp. I believe that a change was appropriate.”
- To say the least Tinordi had a tough time getting into the lineup this season, only playing three games, not recording any points and had a minus-three rating.
► Meet Victor Bartley
► Talbot re-signs in Alberta
- The Edmonton Oilers have signed exalted goaltender Cam Talbot to a three-year extension worth $12.5 million.
- The Oilers acquired the former New York Ranger backstop in exchange for a second, a third and a seventh round pick in the 2015 draft.
- Through 26 games this season the 28-year old has a .914 save percentage and a 2.58 goals against average on an Oilers team that has a defensive core antithetical to the Canadiens’ but might be playing as recklessly.
- Many questioned the decision to give Talbot an extension with a $4.16 AAV with the once emergence of Anders Nilsson who is fresh out of the KHL.
- Nilsson’s play has since dropped off after a resplendent start however Laurent Brossoit, who is in the Oilers’ system, is also having a redoubtable year in the AHL with a .927 save percentage and a 2.55 GAA.
► Remember the 1-3-1?
- With Canadiens coach possibly losing the room but definitely having lost the fanbase, many Habs supporters have turned to promoting Guy Boucher as a potential replacement.
- We would simply say, ‘Careful what you wish for!’

► Downie to the AHL
- The Arizona Coyotes have waived veteran forward Steve Downie after he scored three goals and had six points in 25 games in his first season in Scottsdale.
- The former first round pick was signed by the Coyotes in the offseason coming off a redoubtable season in Pittsburgh that saw him score 14 goals and add the same amount of assists in 72 games, his highest point total since 2011-12 with the Lightning.
- Downie is perennially one of the most penalized players in the NHL, last year recording 238 penalty minutes in just 72 games with the Penguins.
- The 5-foot-11-inch forward was brought into the desert in the offseason to supplement the influx of young talent coming to the roster in the form of Max Domi, Anthony Duclair and Klas Dahlbeck.

► Coffey impressed
- Paul Coffey was one of the best defenceman in NHL history and is thoroughly impressed by the play of Coyotes blueliner Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
- “You’re trying to be the MVP at your position,” Coffey said of the Norris Trophy. “I’ve seen Arizona play, and he’s definitely a standout. He’s a good player at both ends of the rink. Good skater. Good first pass. Terrific on the power play. He’s doing all the things that will hopefully get him in that direction, for sure.”
- He further elaborated on what being an elite NHLer entails. “You’re only as good as your last shift. You start getting those accolades and those acknowledgments, you gotta stay consistent. You gotta be that much better next year.”
- Ekman-Larsson currently has 13 goals and 33 points in 43 games, good enough for third in goals and fourth in points, he’s also third in game-winning goals.
