On this day in hockey history… 1979 — Buffalo Sabres traded right wing Rene Robert to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for defenseman John Van Boxmeer. 1981 — Winnipeg Jets claimed veteran defenseman Serge Savard from Montreal in the annual NHL Waiver Draft. 1983 — On opening night of the 1983-84 NHL season, Marcel Dionne scored his 545th career goal to pass Maurice Richard for fifth place on the NHL’s All Time goal scoring list, as the Kings tied the Minnesota North Stars, 3-3.

► Habs training camp
- The Montreal Canadiens made their final cuts of training camp to get down to the 23-man roster.
- Goaltender Dustin Tokarski and defenceman Mark Barberio were placed on waivers for the purpose of reassignment.
- Forwards Charles Hudon and Sven Andrighetto were sent to the St. John’s IceCaps.
- Jarred Tinordi and Jacob de la Rose will be part of the opening night roster.
- Mike Condon has earned the role of backup to Carey Price. On making the roster, Condon said, “It’s right up there with some of the best accomplishments of my career.”
- The Canadiens lost their final pre-season game to the Senators on Saturday night by a score of 5-4. You can read our game report here: Recap – Canadiens vs Senators: On to the Regular Season, Finally!

► Kassian on a short leash
- Canadiens winger Zack Kassian was involved in a vehicle accident at around 6 am. on Sunday morning on Clanranald Street in NDG. A nearby resident tweeted a photo of the damaged truck saying that Kassian “was in a daze” adding that “he had a hard time walking, and he almost took a fall.
- Kassian was treated in hospital on Sunday and was released. Kassian was a passenger with a 20-year-old woman at the wheel of the truck. Two other passengers were in the vehicle, a 24-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman.
- In a Monday news conference, GM Marc Bergevin announced that Kassian had suffered a fractured nose and fractured left foot. Kassian is not on injured reserve status.
- Bergevin didn’t hide his emotion about the situation saying, “I’m a firm believer in character and that’s really a lack of character and judgment on his part.”
- When asked if this is a wake up call for Kassian, Bergevin said, “I don’t know how many wake up calls you get.” The GM is particularly disappointed as he said that he had “very clear” discussions with the winger about his reputation.
- The Canadiens GM said that he has not yet spoken to Kassian but will “in the near future.” Bergevin said, “I do not have all the information, but it is disappointing to say the least. You have to be respectful. You’re lucky to be hockey players.”
- It is “safe to say” that Kassian is on a short leash, said Bergevin. All options are under consideration, said the GM, including a possible trade, demotion or suspension.
- Speaking about the Kassian situation, former Canadiens enforcer Chris Nilan said, “Anytime in my life I got in trouble, I had alcohol in my system.”

► A full list of waivers
- In addition to Mark Barberio and Dustin Tokarski, several other notable players were placed on waivers.
- Former Canadiens first round bust Louis Leblanc has been waived by the New York Islanders.
- Andrew MacDonald, who has $25.75M remaining on his contract was placed on waivers by the Flyers. Veterans Mason Raymond ($6.3M remaining on his contract) and Max Talbot ( $1M remaining this season) were waived by the Flames and Bruins respectively.
- The Edmonton Oilers sent Leon Draisaitl, former third overall pick, to the AHL.
► Weaver calls it a career
- Former Canadiens defenceman Mike Weaver announced his retirement via Twitter on Monday.

- Whether you believe that the pre-season matters or not, it is clear that the revamped Columbus Blue Jackets will be a different team this season.

► Fleischmann gets a contract
- On Sunday, the Canadiens announced an obvious decision: Tomas Fleischmann had been signed to a one-year contract. The only complaint from Habs fans was why it didn’t come sooner. The left-winger will earn $750,000 under the terms of the contract.
- The forward was invited to training camp on a professional tryout and didn’t fail to impress on a line with David Desharnais and Dale Weise. The trio was the team’s second best line throughout camp.
- Fleischmann was deployed on the powerplay, mostly with his regular linemates but saw time with Alex Galchenyuk on his other wing, where Galchenyuk scored on Saturday.
- The 31-year old has played 518 games in which he has scored 123 goals and added 187 helpers.
- The Koprivnice, Czech Republic native spent his best years playing on one of the best offensive teams in the modern era in Washington and played alongside his current teammate Alex Semin when he wasn’t on the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Sergei Fedorov.
► Scherbak gets in the lineup
- After being sent down by the Canadiens, former first round pick Nikita Scherbak finally saw his first game action with the Ice Caps.
- Despite playing alongside him for most of training camp Scherbak is not playing with Michael McCarron.
- It should also be noted that, for now, Scherbak will be playing left wing; he played right wing for his entire junior career however has noted that he’s comfortable on both sides.
- Adjustments will be made to the lines with the addition of forwards Charles Hudon and Sven Andrighetto. It likely means that Gabriel Dumont and Bud Holloway will be bumped down in the lineup.

► Gonchar released
- Former Canadiens defenceman Sergei Gonchar has been released from his professional tryout with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
- The veteran d-man had a large hill to climb considering the amount of defenceman the ‘Pens have in their system with Derek Pouliot and others. The team already has their top-7 set for this season and Gonchar wasn’t going to be in that mix over younger players and better players, depending on your opinion of Brooks Orpik.
- Gonchar’s specialty is the powerplay, something the Penguins don’t need to improve from the back-end as they have Evgeni Malkin and David Perron playing the point.
- In over 1300 games the Russian has 220 goals and 811 points and in 141 playoff games he has 22 goals and 90 points.
► Another head shot
- After another suspension one would presume that Raffi Torres would have learned his lesson but evidently not with this check to the head of Anaheim Ducks forward Jacob Silverberg.
► Lack gets an extension
- The Carolina Hurricanes acquired goaltender Eddie Lack on June 27th of this year and almost four months later they’ve signed the Swede to a two year contract extension worth $5.5 million.
- The goaltender will be competing with Cam Ward for the number one role but is keeping a positive attitude towards him teammate saying “Cam Ward has been playing great for a lot of years. We’re going to push each other and hopefully achieve some really great results together.”
- In 82 career NHL games Lack has 34 wins, 30 losses and 15 losses in extra time with a career .917 save percentage and a 2.43 goals against average.
► Stempniak signs
- Lee Stempniak was invited to New Jersey Devils training camp on a pro tryout and is now a member of their NHL roster.
- He signed with New Jersey on a one-year, $850,000 contact.
- The forward played the majority of last season in New York but was sent to Winnipeg in a deadline deal that saw Carl Klingberg go the other way.
- In 708 career games, the 32-year old has 165 goals and 369 assists. In 28 career playoff games he has three goals and three assists.
- Last season was a solid one for the New York native who had 17 goals and 28 points in 71 games and took part in the four playoff games he Jets played.
