On this day in hockey history… 1973 – The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame opened in Eveleth, Minnesota. 1984 – Boston acquired Ken Linseman from Edmonton, in exchange for Mike Krushelnyski. 1991 – Mike Bossy, Bob Pulford, Denis Potvin, and veteran Clint Smith were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. 1995 – Quebec Nordiques franchise was given approval by the NHL Board of Governors to move to Denver. The team was later re-named the “Colorado Avalanche.” |

► Trade News
- The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired goaltender Frederik Andersen from the Anaheim Ducks trading away the 30th pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in 2017. The Leafs then signed Andersen to a five-year contract.
- The Florida Panthers acquired the negotiating rights to veteran defenseman Keith Yandle from the New York Rangers for a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and a 2017 conditional fourth-round pick. Yandle is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
- The Chicago Blackhawks traded Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell to the Carolina Hurricanes for a 2016 second round pick and a 2017 third round pick.
► Molson Causes Stir
- Canadiens owner Geoff Molson caused a wave of reaction on Twitter on Monday night when he asked “What are fans thinking as we enter this big week?”
- Popular replies from fans focused on the NHL Draft, signing Steven Stamkos and firing Michel Therrien.

► Draft Mocks
- In their final mocks before the NHL Entry Draft this weekend in Buffalo, NHL.com writers Adam Kimelman and Mike Morreale agree that the first three picks will be Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi.
- Kimelman predicts that the Montreal Canadiens will select Logan Brown, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound center from the Windsor Spitfires.
- In Morreale’s mock, the Canadiens pick up winger Alexander Nylander who recorded 75 points in 57 games for the Mississauga Steelheads.
► Report: Strombo Out, MacLean In (Again)
- Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star is reporting that “George Stroumboulopoulos won’t return as host of Hockey Night in Canada next season.”
- The hiring of Stroumboulopoulos when Rogers acquired NHL broadcasting rights was intended to attract younger viewers. Unfortunately his immaturity, quirky outfits and lack of hockey knowledge turned away regular hockey fans.
- For a variety of reasons the HNIC ratings have plummeted but clearly, Strombo was one of the primary issues.
- Feschuk writes that long time host Ron MacLean will return to the role he held from 1986 until 2014.
► Habs Had Interest in Saad
- Just prior to free agency last summer, the Blackhawks stunned the hockey world by trading forward Brandon Saad to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a blockbuster seven-player trade.
- Craig Custance of ESPN recently reported that Stan Bowman made the trade “in part because of the possibility of an offer sheet from the Montreal Canadiens.”
► Juulsen Invited to Summer Showcase
- Canadiens prospect Noah Juulsen has been named to the Team Canada u20 roster for their summer development camp to take place from July 26 – August 6th. A total of 41 players competing for a spot on the National Junior team will gather in Michigan this summer.

► Dubois Hopes Canadiens Can Land Him
- For months the Canadiens have been tied to Edmonton Oilers in rumours as the Oilers have made it abundantly clear they are willing to move their fourth overall selection to move back and select one of three defenceman ranked in the top ten.
- In an interview with TVA Sports, Pierre-Luc Dubois, slated to go anywhere from fourth to sixth in the upcoming draft, was asked about the role the Canadiens have played in his life and his hypothetical reaction to becoming a member of their organization.
- “With my family, it’s the Canadiens, with my friends, it’s the Canadiens, and they’re one of the best organizations in the NHL and their fans are probably one of the best in the NHL so it would be an honour to be drafted by them,” said Dubois
- In 62 games in the QMJHL last season, the 6-foot-2-inch forward scored 42 goals and recorded 99 points with Cape-Breton.
► Canadiens Home Opener Against Cup Champions
- The Pittsburgh Penguins broke up a four year streak for the Western Conference when the team took home their first Stanley Cup since 2009, and will be the Canadiens’s first opponent at home next season.
- The NHL announced the home openers for respective teams and it was announced the Canadiens will be taking on the Penguins at the Bell Centre on October 18th.
- The Canadiens will be on the road for one home opener next season, being the first opponent to grace the First Niagara Center ice on October 13th as the Habs take on the Buffalo Sabres.
- The reigning Stanley Cup champion Penguins will be facing the Washington Capitals, whom they eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final, for their home opener on October 13th.

► Danault Confident He’ll Be Under Contract Soon
- Acquired in the transaction that saw Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann head to their eventual playoff doom in Chicago, Philip Danault is confident he’ll sign a deal with Montreal in the immediate future.
- In an interview with “Le Quebec Matin” on LCN, Danault voiced his confidence that the two sides will come to an agreement that will match his expectations.
- “I’ve got the [Canadiens] logo tattooed on my heart. I’m very proud to play in Montreal. I wouldn’t be surprised if I signed a contract with the Canadiens,” said Danault.
- Since first donning the Canadiens uniform as a member of the organization, the Victoriaville, Quebec native scored three goals and added two assists in 21 games with the team sporting a minus-two rating.
► When Sports And Real Life Collide
- For years former Montreal Canadiens winger Chris Nilan has refuted allegations that the Stanley Cup championship ring James “Whitey” Bulger has doesn’t belong to Nilan, which came up again this week.
- With the ring set to be sold this upcoming Saturday to benefit Bulger’s victim’s families, Nilan has once again gone public with the admission that the ring being sold doesn’t belong to him.
- “It’s not my ring [that’s going to be sold.] It could maybe be a replica, but that’s not my ring,” Nilan told Le Journal De Montreal.
- “I’ve already made my point and I don’t feel like continuing to talk about this,” continued Nilan. “I don’t want to be mean, but I’ve had enough of this. I gave my ring to my dad, you understand? My dad and not anybody else.”
► Money over everything, money over… Oh wait what?
- Leaving behind $7.5 million and the place you have spent the majority of your adult life living in is rarely an impetuous decision and for Pavel Datsyuk he was aware of his future months in advance, at a minimum.
- According to Chris Cotsonika of NHL.com, Datsyuk decline a $2 million bonus this past February which would’ve been triggered by the assurance that the Russian centerman would be on the ice as a Detroit Red Wing next season.
- Datsyuk announced he would be heading across the Pacific to join Saint Petersburg this past Saturday, an announcement that by no means came out of the blue.
- “The Magic Man” ended his NHL career 47 games shy of 1,000 on his career, scoring 314 goals and finishing with 918 points, along with 113 points in 157 career playoff games and a Stanley Cup.
- Despite the small number of games remaining prior to Datsyuk reaching the 1,000 game mark, it would be anything but a guarantee as he’s struggled heavily with injury issues for the past three seasons.
► Puljujarvi To Miss Development Camp
- The week of the NHL draft few are certain of the holder of the third overall pick, however, the player much more than likely to be selected with that pick won’t be ready for September.
- According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Post-Dispatch, Jesse Puljujarvi underwent minor knee surgery due to an injury that he sustained during the World under-18 tournament.
- As a result, the second ranked finish player in this draft will miss development camp and, depending on which team selects him, the rookie tournament.
- Puljujarvi told Portzline that he will be ready for the regular season, where he is expected to make the roster of the team who selects him.
