► Pacioretty injured

• The Montreal Canadiens announced that forward Max Pacioretty has suffered a knee injury during off ice training in Florida. His recovery is expected to be 12 weeks. That timeline brings us to the beginning of October but it is unclear whether Pacioretty will be ready for the beginning of the season as he will likely miss all of training camp.
• The good news is that he will not require surgery. Team spokesman Dominik Saillant said, “Our team doctors are not talking about surgery at this time.”
• Pacioretty was the Canadiens leading scorer last year with 37 goals and 67 points in 80 games.

► Sharp lands in Dallas

• The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Patrick Sharp and defenseman Stephen Johns to the Dallas Stars in exchange for blueliner Trevor Daley and forward Ryan Garbutt.
• For many Habs fans, Sharp was the last possible external hope to boost an impotent Canadiens offense.
• The move is yet another salary dump measure for the Hawks who earlier in the summer traded Brandon Saad to the Columbus Blue Jackets. To help Chicago’s cap situation the Stars will retain half of Garbutt’s salary over the next two seasons.
• The website generalfanager reports that the Blackhawks have just $982K in cap space remaining with RFA Marcus Kruger unsigned and UFA Johnny Oduya hoping to return to the Windy City.

► Juulsen under contract

• As we reported on Thursday, the Canadiens signed first round pick Noah Juulsen to a three-year entry level contract .
• Juulsen had a great year with an Everett Silvertips team that was ousted in the second round of the WHL playoffs after finishing first in the U.S. Division and fifth in the League. Juulsen had his best season in junior by far and, like most players, it came in his second year. He had nine goals and 43 assists for 52 points in 68 games playing for a defensive minded coach.
• Presuming that he is returned to junior for the next two seasons, Juulsen’s contract will start in 2017-18 and continue until the 2019-20 season.

► Bergevin manning the phones

• In Elliotte Friedman’s “30 Thoughts” column for Sportsnet.ca he noted that Marc Bergevin “is one of the more active GM’s in terms of working the phones.”
  He reported that the Canadiens were in on then free agent forward Matt Beleskey before he decided to sign with Boston. The deal breaker for the Canadiens was the length of term.
• Toronto Maple Leafs forward Shawn Matthias was also on the Habs’ radar but Friedman hinted at nothing more than preliminary talks. Matthias, who was traded to Vancouver in the Roberto Luongo trade, chose to sign with the Leafs instead. He will have a chance to play top six minutes in Toronto, a role that wouldn’t have been open with many other teams.
• Friedman also mentioned that judging from the Canadiens’ needs upfront, he wouldn’t be surprised if Bergevin inquired about the St. Louis Blues winger T.J. Oshie before he was dealt to the Capitals.

► Winter, language and taxes

• Elliotte Friedman indicates that higher taxes in Quebec are still a major impediment to contract negotiations. According to one NHL agent, “Quebec’s taxes are a bigger factor than we consider because they have to bid higher or give more term to overcome.”

► Markov on Therrien

• Speaking with the Montreal Gazette, Andrei Markov spoke about looking beyond his playing career saying, “When that day is going to be there, I’ll think about that. Right now I’m focused on my game and our team, and that’s my priority. Maybe inside of me I have not a dream, but a vision of the future, where I want to be. But I don’t want to talk about it now.”
• Markov also spoke about often-criticized head coach Michel Therrien, “He’s always been open with me, he’s always said if I have something to say, his door is open and I can always ask him something or have a conversation with him. There are no secrets here. And I realize he’s the coach, he has the main pressure on his shoulders, and however he feels comfortable using myself or the guys, that’s his call. Whether I like it or not, I have to take it.”
• About his ice-time Markov said, ” I always like to play a lot. That’s no secret for anyone — every athlete wants to spend more time on the ice or field. But the coaching staff, they decide how much the player is going to play. It’s their call, they have to manage that. All we have to do as players is prepare ourselves for the game and play the best game we can every night.”

► Frankie Boo dishes on P.K., Pacioretty

• Former Habs defenceman (and Michel Therrien favorite) Francis Bouillon shared his views with the Journal de Montreal about former teammate P.K. Subban saying, “He’s a phenomenon. Initially, he [pushed everyone’s buttons] but we quickly realized that this is a guy who needs attention. From everyone. The public, journalists, coaches, teammates and even the guys on the Zamboni. He wants to be loved, and you don’t have a choice, you end up loving it. P.K. is like you’re annoying little brother. But he’s your brother.”
• When asked about the Canadiens captaincy, Bouillon said that he anticipated that the Habs would play a season without a captain because no one was ready. He now believes that Max Pacioretty will be the next captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

► Kassian in the Bleu, Blanc, Rouge

• Recently acquired forward Zack Kassian donned the official Habs jersey for the first time as a member of the team yesterday. He also toured the Canadiens stunning locker room for the first time and did his first photo shoot with Habs TV.

► The goose is locked up

• The Detroit Red Wings signed restricted free agent forward Gustav Nyquist to a four-year contract extension worth $19 million. The average annually value of the deal will be $4.75 million for the 25-year old.
• The Swede’s best season came in 2013-14 when he had 48 points in 57 games. He had a lesser year this year due to the injuries to some of his linemates like Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.
• Nyquist, like so many others in the Red Wings organization, spent parts of 4 years developing in the team’s farm system. He excelled in the two full years he spent in the AHL, winning a Calder Cup in 2012-13.
