On this day in hockey history… 1963 — Former Canadiens’ goalie Jacques Plante returned to the Montreal Forum for the first time as a member of the Rangers. The Habs beat the Rangers 6-2. 1978 — Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg played in their first NHL game, a 3-3 Rangers’ tie against the Flyers, at Madison Square Garden. 1992 — Pavel Bure scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Canucks to an 8-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets, in Vancouver. Bure scored his first NHL hat trick in the second period, and finished with two shorthanded goals in the game.

- On Monday they departed for Pittsburgh at about noon. An afternoon practice scheduled but having played three games in four nights speculation was that it would be cancelled.

► It’s a mirage!
- Former Canadiens winger Rene Bourque is suiting up with the Columbus Blue Jackets this season along side Brandon Dubinsky and Boone Jenner.
- According to Joe Yerdon, Sabres correspondent for NHL.com, he sees a new and improved Bourque.

► Tired of the slights
- Last season Carey Price basically carried the Canadiens to the playoffs but with his team playing a style that barely saw them have possession of the puck. Early on in this year there is a notable difference in playing style and the MVP doesn’t seem to have to be as taxed.
- Habs forward Tomas Plekanec addressed his team’s reputation in front of the Vezina trophy winner.
- “You know what? I’m kind of sick of hearing that we’re a team that’s just about Carey Price. Obviously, he’s the best goaltender in the world,cue all know that. But should we feel sorry for ourselves that we play in front of him?”
- The forward continued in the media scrum “He’s a great goalie, but I think we’re a better team than that. But we’ve got to show that. We’ve got to show that in the game that we’re better. We’ve got to help him out a little bit more.”
- Through the first couple games of the season, the Canadiens have scored an average of 3.5 goals per game.
► Negotiations to begin soon
- Following the night that he put his 500th point into an empty net it was reported that the Habs and their centre man Tomas Plekanec would be starting contract negotiations soon.
- According to Louis Jean of TVA Sports, Plekanec’s agent, Rick Curran, said the two sides would be soon igniting contract talks.
- He also reported that Curran spoke with Bergevin about another client and the two sides decided to begin negotiations soon. Curran also represents Zack Kassian.
- Furthermore, Jean was told that there wasn’t animosity because there hasn’t been a deal in place between the two sides despite varying reports.
- Plekanec is “happy in Montreal” and wants to remain with the Canadiens. The Czech born forward is set to become an unrestricted free agent come July 1st 2016.
► Happy to be back
- Generally, when you commit to a city for the next six years at a relatively reduced rate, you like where you are and that’s the case with Canadiens defenceman Jeff Petry.
- “When you come to that point (free agency) and you have to make a big decision it has to be something that you’re both happy where we are. Coming here, the energy of the city and what there was to do in the city is what made it big for her. It was a pretty easy decision to come back.” Petry told The Montreal Gazette.
- “It’s very nice. I remember my last year in Edmonton it could take me anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to get to the rink (for practice), so to have the convenience of living here, it takes 10 minutes … it’s really beneficial.”
- Petry signed a six-year, $33 million contract this offseason. He was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers at this past trade deadline in exchange for a second and a third round pick.
► IceCaps play two
- The Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, the St. John’s Ice Caps played the first game of their 76 game season last night versus the Hartford Wolf Pack.
- The starting lineup was as follows:

- The Ice Caps took down Hartford by the score of 3-1 with Bud Holloway, Jeremy Gregoire, and Charles Hudon being their goal scorers.
- The goal was Gregoire’s first one of the professional variety and it came while the team was shorthanded.
- Dustin Tokarski had a great night stopping 30/31 shots directed towards him.
- The Canadiens former backup did not have a good follow-up game in Bridgeport on Sunday night. The IceCaps entered the third period tied 1-1 but the SoundTigers scored five times in the final frame for a 6-1 win.
► Unwavering support
- The Canadiens have a lot of Ontario born players in their locker room so their dressing room obviously houses a lot of Blue Jays fans.
- While on their way to Boston P.K. Subban made this video to show the Jays have the team’s support.
► You want defenceman? I got it!
- According to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune the Blackhawks are looking for a trade partner for a defenceman.
- The Canadiens have eight defenceman in the NHL right now and have a very capable one in the AHL. All the ‘Hawks’ top four “dmen” are left handed and their major deficiencies on defence are Trevor Van Riemsdyk and David Rundblad, who are both right handed shots.
- There have been many rumours surrounding Tom Gilbert possibly being moved to make way for Greg Pateryn.
- Also, there’s no shortage of ties between Marc Bergevin and the Blackhawks organization and, in the past, Bergevin has expressed interest in Jeremy Morin, who is currently in the AHL.
► The apocalypse is on its way
- With everybody expecting eventual sponsorships on jersey in North America, this multi-year deal caught most off guard.
- Geico and the ECHL announced a partnership which would put the Geico logo on the goal posts and the posts will be painted blue.
- ECHL commissioner Brian McKenna was pleased with the deal “The ECHL is very pleased to enter into the multi-year partnership with GEICO, one of the country’s largest insurance companies and most recognized and admired brands. The ECHL will bring direct exposure to over 4.5 million fans in some of the best markets and venues in the country, and millions more through our television and digital platforms.”

► Alexander Ovechkin rides again
- The Capitals played their first game of the season on Saturday and it only took Alex Ovechkin little over two periods to dazzle the hockey world.
- The outstanding goal was the Russian sniper’s first of the season and it propelled the Capitals to a 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils.
