► Habs training camp
- The Montreal Canadiens held a practice Sunday morning at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard to prepare for their fifth exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Quebec City on Monday.
- Tomas Fleischmann, David Desharnais and Dale Weise were given the day off.
- Nikita Scherbak returned to practice after being sidelined with an ankle injury.

► Trimming the roster
- On Saturday, the Canadiens general Manager Marc Bergevin announced that 17 players had been cut from Habs camp and sent to St. John’s. On Sunday, the organization followed up with an additional cut of nine players including training camp standouts Michael McCarron and Daniel Carr.
- The Canadiens have 31 players remaining at camp including 18 forwards, 10 defensemen and 3 goaltenders.
- Michel Therrien hinted that Jacob de la Rose could be one of the next cuts saying that there is no guarantee that the young centre begins the season in Montreal.
► Condon gets lessons
- Following Mike Condon’s shutout of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night a video shot last year began making the rounds on social media.
► Auditions continue
- Head coach Michel Therrien is still focusing on the auditions for a roster spot. Therrien spoke about Zack Kassian, Devante Smith-Pelly and Brian Flynn saying “Those are guys that are usually fourth line guys, energy guys, so these are games that are hard for them so no it doesn’t worry me.”
- Nathan Beaulieu has clearly taken strides through over the last two seasons but Therrien still see’s his development as a process. “Nathan, we put him with a young kid, and from our standpoint, we still see Nathan as a really young defenceman in the NHL who’s trying to establish himself in the top six so, there are some good things and are some things that he has to learn, […] it’s a process to work with young defenceman.”
- At this point in the preseason, goaltenders usually begin to play full games and the case is no different with the Canadiens. “All goalies from [Friday’s game] on will be playing a full 60 minutes […] there’s a large possibility that we will see [Price] in Quebec [on Monday],” said Therrien.
► As fast as always
- Despite the knee surgery, Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty seems as fast as ever, according to teammate Tomas Plekanec. “I was glad to see him there, yeah, that early obviously we’re all happy for him that he’s recovering very quickly and he’ll be ready to go.”
- A large part of Pacioretty’s game is based around speed and judging from what Plekanec saw that shouldn’t be a problem coming off of knee surgery. The veteran centre said, “He’s the same as he was, I mean it’s the first practice I’ve seen him and he looks the same as he was last year I don’t see any sign that he’s hurt.”
- “I have no idea, but it looks like it so far,” Plekanec said with a smile about the idea of starting the season alongside the team’s captain.
► Not an NHLer
- Mike Bossy is one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, has seen his fair share of defenceman in his day. For whatever it’s worth, Bossy doesn’t believe Jarred Tinordi is an NHL caliber D-man.
- While doing a segment for TVA Sports, Bossy gave his opinion on the former 1st round pick saying “He’s not someone who makes decisions fast enough, he plays just enough of a physical game to qualify him as a physical player. There are six spots on a defensive core and you have to play like (Andrei) Markov or (P.K.) Subban to be on the top pair, besides that if you’re playing in the bottom nine you have to separate yourself by some way.”
- “You can’t make mistakes, or be a physical force in the defensive zone and I don’t see it in Tinordi, […] at some points, he doesn’t know what to do with the puck,” said Bossy.
► In the heat of battle
- P.K. Subban and Brendan Gallagher are both fierce competitors and yesterday at Canadiens practice the two got into a little scurmish.
- During Sunday’s practice Carey Price and P.K. Subban were involved in a playful fight with Price pulling the jersey over Subban’s head to end it.
► Murray blows his chance
- Former Canadiens defenceman Douglas Murray was invited to Calgary Flames camp on a professional tryout but the veteran didn’t even make it to the end of camp. The Flames released Murray from his tryout and he is now a free agent once again.
- The tryout was most likely to get a body in there so the players on the NHL roster don’t have to play as many games especially considering how much organizational depth Calgary not only has in the NHL but in the AHL as well.
- The 6-foot-3, 240-pound skater spent most of his career with the San Jose Sharks but did play in 53 games with the Habs back in 2013-14 where he only had two assists and was a minus-12.
- In 518 career games the 35-year old has seven goals and 64 points along with 412 penalty minutes.
► Chara leaves game with an injury
- As if this season hasn’t been horrific enough for the Boston Bruins defence, including dealing away Dougie Hamilton and Dennis Seidenberg being out for eight weeks, they also lost a pillar.
- Chara left a game versus the Rangers he was hit into the boards by 5-foot-9-inch Ryan Bourque and his hip hit the bench, he left the game.
- Depending on how long Chara is out, the Bruins top six could be as follows: Krug-McQuaid, Irwin-Miller, Zach Trotman and possibly the newly signed Brandon Carlo, although I wouldn’t expect him to make the team, out of camp.
- The common presumption surrounding the Bruins captain about him wearing down might be true but he’s played 70 or more games in every season as a full time NHLer aside from last season when he only played 63.
► The Bruins sign Carlo
- The Boston Bruins and second round pick Brandon Carlo have come to terms on a entry level contract. The signing doesn’t guarantee the 6’5 defenceman a roster spot but his chances were enhanced this week with the losses of Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg. The only problem for Carlo is that those injuries are to left handed defenceman not right handed ones like himself and I doubt, despite some questionable moves, that the Bruins are dumb enough to play him on his off side and start him off with a disadvantage.
- In 134 games in his WHL career, the former 37th overall pick has seven goals and 38 points along with a minus-28 rating. So far, he has scored a single goal in a game against the New York Rangers.
