► Three Canadiens crack the top 50
- The Hockey News magazine released its top 50 players list and to the surprise of nobody Canadiens goaltender Carey Price was atop the list. They had this to say on the Habs goalie: “No team relies on one player more than the Canadiens do on Price. Duplicating his performance from last season will come down to whether he can handle that kind of pressure and workload. There’s nothing to suggest he won’t.”
- Behind Price are Jonathan Toews, Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
- P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty were the only other Canadiens players to crack the list with P.K. landing 22nd and Pacioretty ranked 32nd.
- THN on Subban: “Nobody embraces celebrity in the fishbowl that is Montreal better than Subban. What’s even better is he wants to be a difference maker on the ice and relishes the challenge of big games.”
- The Hockey News on the Canadiens’ sniper: “With 76 goals over the past two seasons, Pacioretty is the only consistent offensive weapon the Canadiens have. He needs some support.”
► Beliveau honored
- The city of Trois-Rivieres honored the memory of the greatest captain in Canadiens history, Jean Beliveau.
- A park near the place where the legend was born in Trois-Rivieres was named after him this week. His wife, Elise, was happy with the park being named after her husband “I’m very happy, and so are my kids.”
- His sister, Bernadette, was also pleased to have a park near their childhood home named ater her brother “I think they do things very well. It’s a nice thought for my brother. He’s not with us, but where he is very good.”
► Big bird continues to fight
- Stu Cowan met up with Larry Robinson at a breast cancer charity Poker Tournament.
- On how he found out he had melanoma: “Living in Florida, because of the strength of the sun, you have your skin tested. I had a little spot on the inside of my left knee and they said, ‘It’s nothing, it looks like an old blood blister,’ so [we] didn’t do anything about it. With my wife bugging me to go have it checked.” After seeing another doctor they discovered two more black spots.
- “He said he didn’t like them and was going to take them out, and I mentioned the black spot on the inside of my knee. He said it didn’t look like much but that he’d do it, too. I figured he wanted to remove some more stuff, But in his office, he told me the one on the inside of my knee was melanoma and that he wanted to send me in for tests.”
- “The doctor just said, ‘No, no, no … you have to get this done NOW. It’s cancerous. It could spread. You don’t mess with it.”
- Big bird on initially being told he had skin cancer: “Maybe it’s worse for people who are hit closer to home. When I was given the diagnosis, I imagined the worst-case scenario.”
► Robinson still loves the Habs
- He was also interviewed at the same event by TSN 690 and spoke about the team he loves.
- On how much he loves coming back to Montreal: “Oh I love it I mean, to me this is where my career started and this is where my great times in my career have happened. I love Montreal it’s a great city, it’s a great sports town and in my heart I still watch and love the Montreal Canadiens.”
- On the Canadiens acquiring Alex Semin: “You can think back of [Kovalev], when Kovy came here he had some good years and all of a sudden he was questioning whether he wanted to play anymore […] similar type player tremendous, tremendous amount of talent but everybody questions does he have the heart, does he want to play anymore.”
- “Having played in Montreal you know what it’s like, here in Montreal it either makes you or breaks you, they took a chance and they hope that it makes him.”
► Carbonneau optimist for the Canadiens
- RDS analyst and former Canadiens captain Guy Carbonneau also took time out of his schedule to speak with TSN690.
- Carbo on if the Semin signing can hurt the Canadiens: “I don’t think so, his reputation follows him he’s had a tough time the last couple years but like you said he’s just been bought out, every athlete wants to do well, I don’t know anybody that goes on the ice or the tennis court and tries not to do well so I’m sure that he wants to redeem himself.”
- On the powerplay: “Powerplay is the most frustrating part of a hockey team, when it works it’s fun but it only works once every five powerplays if you have a good powerplay obviously having a guy like [Semin] will definitely help.”
- On either Kassian or Smith-Pelly getting top 6 minutes with the Canadiens: “I don’t think so, I don’t think, for me, Smith-Pelly is a top 6 player I think he’s been okay with the Canadiens since he’s been here. He’s had one good playoffs, like you said he’s still a young kid that’s learning the game. With Kassian there’s potential I think that’s why they drafted him, why he hasn’t come to term yet nobody knows but I didn’t mind the trade, I loved Brandon [Prust] for what he did on the ice.”
► Alfredsson back in Ottawa?
- According to Ian Mendes on TSN a source told TSN 1200 that Daniel Alfredsson is on the verge of signing a contract with the Sens to join their management group.
- More specifically “Alfie” will soon be joining the Senators’ hockey operations department.
- The longest tenured captain in team history left the Senators after he felt like GM Bryan Murray put his contract talks on the back burner and subsequently joined the Detroit Red Wings.
- That mess was seemingly cleaned up when cameras caught Alfredsson in the team box with GM Bryan Murray which led to wide spread speculation that’s coming to light now with the Sens’ alleged hiring of the Swede.
► Sydor in big trouble
- Former NHL defenceman and current Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darryl Sydor was charged with a DUI after being pulled over with a blood alcohol content of .30; the legal limit is .09.
- To make this story even more horrific Sydor was driving his 12-year old son to hockey practice at the time.
- The Wild released this statement on the situation: “We are aware of the reports regarding Darryl Sydor. We are continuing to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time.”
- The 43-year old played 1291 games over 19 seasons, in which he had 98 goals and 507 points. He played 155 playoff games and recorded 9 goals and 55 points.
► Bossy reunited with puck
- In 1980-81 Mike Bossy scored 50 goals in 50 games. 35 years later Bossy has finally been reunited with the puck.
- The puck was originally lost when Jake Jacobson coached Bossy’s daughter and since she like that coach so much she gave him the illustrious piece of rubber.
- Jacobson tried to trade the puck for a chance to meet Bossy but the Hall of Famer refused each time. Jacobson subsequently sold the puck on Ebay for $6,850.
- Gavin Maloof bought the puck and gave it back to the sniper. “”I said, ‘We need to get this puck. It means a lot to Mr. Bossy. Fifty goals in 50 games. Only a handful of people have ever done that. I needed to buy this puck. I don’t care how much it costs.”
- Bossy noted that his daughter is “finally off the hook”.
