On this day in hockey history

1984 — The Los Angeles Kings beat the Edmonton Oilers, 4-2, ending Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record run for consecutive point getting at 51 games. Gretzky collected a total of 153 points (61 goals and 92 assists) during the scoring streak, which started October 5, 1983.

1996 — Jacques Martin appointed head coach of the NHL Ottawa Senators.
