► Yahoo: Price is best in the league
- In Yahoo Sports’ “And Now For Something Completely Serious” rankings, Carey Price is rated as the league’s No. 1 netminder. A no-brainer. About Price, Sam McCaig writes “There’s no doubt about the best goalie in the game. Right? Right.” Pekka Rinne and Henrik Lundqvist round out the top three goaltenders. Devan Dubnyk, the goalie that Marc Bergevin let walk after acquiring him at the 2014 trade deadline is ranked No. 13.
- Another obvious decision has Sidney Crosby ranked as the No. 1 centre. The Canadiens don’t have a centre in the top-25 with Tomas Plekanec getting an honorable mention. San Jose has three players on the list in Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Joe Thornton at No. 14, 16, and 18 respectively.
- On left wing, Alex Ovechkin takes the top spot with Max Pacioretty coming in at No. 7. On Pacioretty: “Another power forward who sets the tone for his team with his hitting and scoring ways.”
- Patrick Kane is the class of the right wingers. The top Canadien is Brendan Gallagher ranked at No. 18. On Gallagher, McCaig writes, “We’re required by law to use the following description: “Pesky, annoying Habs sparkplug.””
- Yahoo ranks Drew Doughty as the league’s top defenseman, followed by Duncan Keith, Mark Giordano, and Erik Karlsson. P.K. Subban is described this way, “They don’t come more dynamic or passionate than the Habs catalyst,” picking up the No. 5 ranking.
► Bergevin signs Semin to boost offense
- Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin signed Alexander Semin to a one-year contract on Friday worth $1.1 million.
- On his new acquisition, Bergevin said, “Alex is a pure goal-scorer with a good shot. We believe his addition to our group of forwards will strengthen our offensive production and our power play. A veteran winger with size, Semin has reached the 20-goal plateau seven times since the beginning of his NHL career 12 years ago. His signing represents a great opportunity for the organization and for Alex’s career.”

- One of Michel Therrien’s favorite buzz phrases is compete level. According to Hurricanes GM Ron Francis, it’s something Semin lacked last season. Francis said, “He certainly has had some injuries, but last season he did not have the compete level we expect. We talk about holding our players accountable, and there were some things we felt he did not hold up to, so we made this decision (to buy out his contract.)”

► Don’t touch the Cup Artturi!
- Canadiens prospect Artturi Lehkonen formed a potent duo with countryman Teuvo Teräväinen at the National Development Camp tourney in Lake Placid in 2013. In a game against the Americans, Lehkonen picked up a hat trick with Teräväinen adding a goal and three assists.
- With Teräväinen taking his turn with the Stnaley Cup as part of the Chicago Blackhawks celebrations, the two friends were reunited.
► Defenseman Bennett is an entrepreneur
- Canadiens prospect Mac Bennett majored in musicology at the University of Michigan but has entered the business world as VP of Marketing for State and Liberty Clothing Co. Along with fellow UM alums Lee Moffie and Steve Fischer, Bennett is promoting the company’s dress shirts designed specifically to fit hockey players.
- Their clients include NHLers such as Ryan Kesler, James van Riemsdyk and Cory Schneider.
- When interviewed by THN, Bennett explained his decision to take on this project, “We both want long careers in hockey. But the reality is, we’re one hit away from being done.”
