On this day in hockey history 1976 – Defenseman Bobby Orr signed with the Chicago Black Hawks as a free agent, after 11 seasons with Boston. 1980 – The Atlanta Flames franchise moved to Calgary, Alberta. 1999 – Mario Lemieux was confirmed as the new owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. 2000 – Rick DePietro became the first goaltender to be selected first overall in the NHL Draft, when he was selected by the New York Islanders at the 2000 Entry Draft.
