On this day in hockey history… 1944 — Toe Blake scored the game winner at 9:12 of OT and added four assists, as Montreal beat Chicago 5-4 in Game 4 of the Finals to win the 1944 Stanley Cup. 1982 — Dale Hunter scored the winning goal at 0:22 of overtime to lead the Nordiques to a 3-2 win at Montreal, in Game 5 of the Adams Division Semi-Finals. 1994 — Vancouver’s Pavel Bure scored his 60th goal of the season becoming just the eighth player in NHL history to score 60 or more goals twice in a career. |

► Over too soon
- With a 22nd place finish, the Canadiens will be absent from the NHL playoffs which begin on Wednesday evening. At present, Montreal owns the ninth pick in the Entry Draft that takes place in Buffalo on June 24-25th.
- The lottery to set the draft order takes place on April 30th. The Canadiens have a five percent chance of picking first overall. Top prospect Auston Matthews has a 68.5 per cent chance of being selected by a Canadian team. Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi are expected to be taken second and third overall.

- Goaltender Ben Scrivens has said goodbye to Montreal and now to St. John’s.

► Habs pursued Panarin
- A story in the Journal de Montreal suggests that Blackhawks sensation Artemi Panarin could have been a Montreal Canadien. Assistant GM Scott Mellanby followed Panarin through his final year in the KHL.
- Marc Bergevin made a healthy offer but Panarin accepted less money to go to Chicago. Whether his decision was due to the coaching staff, taxes, language or the media is unclear. But the rookie of the year candidate would have been a welcome boost to the Habs top-six.
► Six Canadiens Off To Russia
- In the ruins of the Canadiens season six of the team’s players will be headed off to Russia to join their respective countries for the World Hockey Championship.
- Mike Condon (USA), Brendan Gallagher (Canada), Tomas Plekanec (Czech Republic), Alexei Emelin (Russia) Lars Eller (Denmark) and Sven Andrighetto (Switzerland) will be joining their countrymen later on in the week.
- Alex Galchenyuk, Carey Price and P.K. Subban decline to play for their country overseas due to injuries whereas Max Pacioretty and Andrei Markov declined, presumably, to stay home with their families.
- Gallagher, Condon, Eller and Andrighetto will be taking part in their first men’s international tournament, Plekanec and Emelin have taken part in prior events.
- Plekanec, the most experienced internationally out of the bunch, has played 71 games International games, recording 20 goals and 49 points.
► Galchenyuk Nursed An Injury?
- Alex Galchenyuk’s proratedly magical 2015-16 came to an end with a bang with the young American finding the back of the net for the 30th time, and, according to his sister, was hampered by an injury while doing so.
- In an Instagram post, Anna Galchenyuk, mentioned that the Milwaukee, Wisconsin native scored 30 goals in his fourth N.H.L. season despite playing upwards of 15 games with a broken finger.
- “#30 goals scored🚨 AND Played the last 15+ games with a broken finger!” the elder Galchenyuk posted multiple days ago on the social media platform.
- Galchenyuk’s 30 goals, 56 points and 82 games played were all career high’s for the 22-year old, with his goal total was tied with Pacioretty for the team lead and his 56 points were second only to the Canadiens captain.
► All Safe…Except One
- The Canadiens end of year press conference didn’t help quiet the insatiable fan base but it did bring to light the firing of former team coaching Consultant Craig Ramsay.
- The Canadiens added the former NHLer during the offseason but less than a calendar year later the 65-year old former second round pick.
- Marc Bergevin made the announcement during the year-end press conference that essentially said more of nothing but wrapped it in a different package.
- Ramsay spent upwards of 1,000 games in the NHL, originally being drafted by the Buffalo Sabres, with the 19th overall pick, he scored 252 goals and recorded 672 points over his 1,070 games in the NHL.
► Emelin Hoping to Stay in Montreal
- The amalgam of him having a $4,100,000 cap hit for the next two seasons, Mark Barberio’s play and the tweet authored by Bob McKenzie prophesizing his departure has put Alexei Emelin rumours into a new atmosphere of almost certainty, but the blueliner would nevertheless wish to remain a Hab.
- In an interview with TVA Sports, the Russian defenceman emphasized his disappointment with not taking part in the postseason and his desire to stay in Montreal.
- “It’s a shame not to participate in the playoffs. As a professional athlete, that’s a failure for me,” said the former third round pick through a translator. “ (…) Now, I want to stay here, I am now a citizen of Quebec and I want to continue to get involved in the local community,”
- The 29-year old had 12 points, all of which were assists, and 71 penalty minutes in 72 games this season, he’s played all 304 of his NHL games in a Montreal Canadiens uniform.
► Kadri, Reilly Sign
- Forward Nazem Kadri and defenseman Morgan Rielly each signed six-year contracts with the Toronto Maple Leafs. TSN is reporting that Kadri’s contract has an average annual value of $4.5 million and Rielly’s deal is for $5 million.
- Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello said, “[Kadri] showed that he can be put in any role no matter what it might be. He knows now the respect the organization has for him and what he can do.”
► Pacioretty Scored Number 30 For Ms. Beliveau
- In a season chock full of disappointment and an eventual lack of motivation, Max Pacioretty found some in the form of Elise Beliveau.
- With the American sniper sitting at 29 goals on the season Madame Beliveau gave him a source of inspiration going into the last period of the Canadiens’ season.
- “At the end of the second period, Ms. Beliveau spoke to me to tell me that she wanted to see me score another goal. I couldn’t let her down. She had expectations. When [Gallagher] made that nice pass to me I was thinking by of her.”
- Though the Canadiens captain was seven goals off his pace from the preceding season, with 30, his 64 points were only three less then his career-high 67 in the 2014-15 campaign.
► Sens Coaching Staff Cleaned Out
- Following a season saved by an unprecedented run, the Ottawa Senstors have failed to make the playoffs and have subsequently cleaned house in their coaching staff.
- With Brian Murray stepping down, new GM Pierre Dorion has made his first move by letting go not only head coach Dave Cameron, but assistants Rick Wamsley, Andre Tourigny and Jason Smith was moved to another spot in the organization.
- The newly minted General Manager took responsibility for the turnover “We just felt we needed to make a whole change. At the end of the day, this was my call and I felt it was the right thing to do.”
- Under Cameron, the Senators went 70-50-17 with a playoff appearance, in which they lost to the Canadiens, in his first season as head coach last year, when he took over 27 games into the season.
Eugene Melnyk says no one on the #Sens, including Erik Karlsson is untouchable. He'll leave that up to the hockey people.
