► P.K. optimistic of the team’s chances
- P.K Subban was at a Jose Bautista’s golf tournament and Hugh Burrill from Sportsnet.ca caught up with the Canadiens’ highest paid player.
- P.K. On what Carey Price will do for an encore: “You know it’s one of those things, he doesn’t have to change anything he just keeps playing the way he’s playing, if anything as a team we want to be better in front of him. […] I’ve said it before I’ll be saying it for a long time, he’s the best goalie in the world and we need him to be that way every night for us to win.”
- On taking the next step: “I think as a team we are looking to make that next step and what damage you can do in the playoffs moving forward and we are going to have another opportunity to take another step forward in this organization and I think we are getting closer to where we want to be but ultimately time will tell where we’re at.”
- On how far away the team is: “I think no matter what team you have you always think you can add to your team but the reality is when the puck drops whoever’s on the ice and who’s on the roster has to get the job done so for us as players it’s about looking forward but in the back of your mind you’re always hoping that help is going to be brought in to help us win a championship.”
► Gallagher’s charity event a smash hit
- As has been mentioned many times this week Brendan Gallagher was having a charity softball game in Vancouver with many NHLers and it was a big success.
- “Not every kid gets the same opportunities in life as others do. It would be nice if you could do something to help change that. You look back to when you were growing up and over time you really appreciate how lucky you were to be able to do what you wanted, I’ve always had a soft spot for helping kids, children that haven’t been as fortunate as others.”
- The charity at Gallagher did this for, Shriners Hospital, will be having a dedication on the 20th of August in Montreal but the 23-year old will not be able to attend. Gallagher is nevertheless happy to be affiliated with them: “I feel fortunate to be associated with them. When the chance came up to put together a charity event that could help kids in need, I was thrilled.”
► Emelin speaks
- In a rare moment Canadiens defenceman Alexei Emelin spoke with Matt Cudzinowski of Canadiens.com to talk about his offseason thus far, among other things.
- The Russian defenceman on his goals for the upcoming season: “I’m ready to get out there and try to win the Cup again. It’s a challenge for everyone to grow and take another step every season. It’s the same for me, too. I think this team is ready to take another step forward.”
- “I’m still going to play hard and hit, but I hope to pick up a few more goals along the way. I can do it. I need to be more active in the offensive zone, more active on the blue line and more physical in the defensive zone, too.”
- On his countryman Alex Semin: “I played with him in my hometown of Togliatti. I think he’s a very good guy. He’s very offensive. He has good quick hands and good vision. I think he’ll help us on the power play. I know he’s got a very good wrist shot. He’ll be a good player for us.”
- On his offseason regimen: “I trained every morning in Russia. I ran a lot. After surgery, I couldn’t really run for a few years. I think I needed to run more. I like it. That’s something I love to do in the summertime. It’s good preparation for the season, I worked out by myself. This year, I didn’t skate in Russia, though.”
► Mitchell loves the Habs
- Canadiens forward Torrey Mitchell spoke about becoming a Habs fan when interviewed by Stu Cowan: “Yeah I was a big Joe Sakic fan so I liked the Colorado Avalanche but I mean you can’t grow up in Montreal and not be a Habs fan.”
- On his favourite player as a kid: “Probably Patrick Roy, I was a goalie too in the backyard rink so. [I liked Sakic’s] goal scoring he was just a clutch goal scorer and scored big goals, and he always scored big goal for Canada too in the Olympics so I remember that.”
- On playing on the same ice as Joe Sakic: “It was like the fourth game into my rookie year, NHL career, fourth game and we were playing in Denver and I was like ‘Wow that’s Joe Sakic’ I was pretty star struck so, it was a moment I will remember forever.”
► Adidas now making NHL jerseys
- Starting in the 2017-18 season NHL jerseys will no longer be Reebok as it has been for the past decade or so, Adidas has made a long term deal with the NHL to be the official supplier of NHL jerseys. Reebok however, is owned by Adidas.
- According to Rick Westhead of TSN.ca Adidas beat out Under Armour and Bauer for the right to make NHL jersey and according to a source the deal will pay the NHL $35 million per season and the rights fee will also double.
- Much to the chagrin of hockey fans, change might be coming beyond the logo around the player’s’ neck: “The NHL might not want big changes like that, but for the money Adidas will pay, they’ll be pretty aggressive pushing to make the NHL jerseys identifiable with their brand.”
- Another rumour is that Adidas will also be providing jerseys for the World Cup of Hockey which is coming up next September.
- The fear that most hockey fans have is they don’t want advertising on team’s jersey. Owners estimate that teams could get a $4 million increase if they allow advertising in the jerseys, not a good sign for hockey fans.
- What a league source told TSN is even more frightening: “If you’re already deciding on a major NHL jersey overhaul, maybe with Adidas striping on the jerseys, then it seems like it would be a good time to introduce the ads, if you plan to do it anyway.”

► Bruins in court with the IRS
- The Bruins are currently in tax court with the IRS, arguing that player and staff meals on the road should be tax deductible. The IRS claimed the Bruins owe a total of $85,028 in taxes from 2009 and 2010.
- The IRS only allows 50 per cent deduction from the total costs of the meals if it’s classified under entertainment, amusement, or recreation. The Bruins say that feeding their athletes is a “fundamental part of their business”.
- The NHL isn’t letting the Bruins go in alone on this one, deputy commissioner Bill Daley supported the team via a statement: “The league supports the position that the club is taking in the case and is therefore coordinating the litigation for the potential benefit of all of its member clubs. This is often done in individual club cases where the outcome may or will have an effect on a large number of similarly situated clubs or the league as a whole.”
- If the Bruins are in their “business premises” A.K.A the TD Garden, there will be less taxation. The Bruins are trying to argue that their “business premises” is not confined to the TD Garden.
► Brière hangs them up
- Former Philadelphia Flyers forward Danny Brière announced his retirement on Sunday.
- The 37 year old forward played for 17 seasons after being drafted 24th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996. He played 973 games in which he had 307 goals and 696 points with the Coyotes, Sabres, Flyers, Canadiens and Avalanche.
- The playoffs are really where the diminutive forward made his scratch with 53 goals and 116 points in 124 games.
- After Brière was bought out by the Flyers in the 2012-13 offseason he signed a 2-year $8 million contract with the Canadiens amid rumours of Vincent Lecavalier join the Habs.
- Brière played 69 games with the Canadiens that season, mostly on the fourth line, and picked up 13 goals and 25 points. The man they called Danny B had 3 goals and 7 points in the playoffs that year.
► Master of their own domains
- Celebrity chef Chuck Hughes and Canadiens centre Lars Eller taught each other a little both about their trade for some entertaining videos by the Canadiens’ YouTube Channel.
► Santorelli a Duck
- The Anaheim Ducks signed free agent forward Mike Santorelli to a one-year, one-way deal worth $875,000.
- Santorelli was with the Leafs for the large part of last season before he was deal to Nashville in the deal that sent Cody Franson to Nashville.
- Last season the centreman had 12 goals and 33 points to go along with a 0 rating in 79 games played.
- The 29-year old has 55 goals and 120 points in 336 regular season games over 9 years with Florida, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto and Nashville.
- This season was the first one in which he made a playoff appearance registering 1 goal in 4 game with the Ducks.
- According to the Toronto Sun when the Toronto Maple Leafs fired then general manager Dave Nonis he had three options to join NHL team. The a senior consultant job with the Anaheim Ducks, which he ended up taking, an undisclosed job with another team, and another undisclosed job with the Montreal Canadiens.
- Nonis was hired as the Leafs GM in 2012 and was subsequently fired almost 3 years later.
