Game Report

It was an anxious and emotional day for Canadiens players and their fans. Montreal said goodbye to Artturi Lehkonen, Brett Kulak and Andrew Hammond. And they welcomed David Savard back into the lineup from injury.

Following the NHL trade deadline, the Canadiens hosted a longtime bitter rival. The Bruins are top-10 in the NHL while the Habs are dead last. Yet, it was a very competitive game.

The first period was a dud for the home team, perhaps mentally taxed from the events of the day. The next 40 minutes was much more evenly played. While the Bruins shot at will from all over the ice, high-danger scoring chances were 7-6 for the final two periods in regulation plus overtime.

That said, this was a game where the Canadiens appeared to be chasing the play. Boston was the team with more energy and drive throughout the match.

Joel Armia scored on a short-handed breakaway and Savard recorded his second goal of the season.

The Canadiens came up short on the scoreboard but this day was all about the future. And Habs fans should be very encouraged by the moves made in the lead-up to the trade deadline.

Up Next

The Canadiens will welcome Ben Chiarot and the Florida Panthers on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis

  • “I love my players, and I’ve developed working relationships with guys like (Artturi) Lehkonen, (Brett) Kulak and (Andrew) Hammond – and even when ‘Benny’ (Chiarot) is gone – so it’s hard.”
  • “I’m disappointed that we lost, but with the circumstances of the day, I think it was a very good effort from the group.

Jake Allen

  • “Tonight I felt tenfold better. I’m back to my old self.”
