Habster:
In the new era of the NHL salary cap where teams have to pinch their pennies, it will be very difficult for any team to develop a dynasty like the Islanders, Canadiens or Oilers did in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
For me, a dynasty is when a team dominates a sport and wins 3-5 championships within a 5-7 year period which truly hasn’t happened since the Edmonton Oilers of the eighties won five Cups in a seven year period (1983-1990……the Habs and Flames won the other two cups during that time).
I’m not saying that it won’t happen but a general manager will have to have things fall into place with his drafting, player development and ability to sign UFAs. Once all these aspects do fall into place, he still has to hope he can retain the core of the team while still developing his roster via the draft. It’s a delicate balancing act which involves a bit of luck and a strong hockey operation plan.
