Edmonton Sun:
TRADE 1
Toronto C Mats Sundin to Montreal for LW Chris Higgins, prospect C Ryan McDonough and a No. 1 pick in 2008: Leafs Nation might think this is nuts, but if Sundin approves a trade, don’t rule out the Habs being in on the sweepstakes. Interim Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher has a strong relationship with Habs counterpart Bob Gainey and wouldn’t be afraid to move the captain to a Northeast Division rival. Higgins would give the Leafs some immediate help, McDonough, Montreal’s top pick in 2007, is a strong prospect and the No. 1 pick could fill a need.
Habster:
I had to post this crazy and absolutely off the wall trade suggestion from the Edmonton Sun…….simply put, this is a non-starter!!!( I figured you needed a Sunday morning laugh beyond your newspaper cartoons). Gainey will not part with Christopher Higgins, Ryan McDonagh and their 2008 1st round pick for a rental player like Mats Sundin who is having a great season but wouldn’t be interested to stay in Montreal beyond the remainder of the season. Bob Gainey will not disturb the great chemistry on the current roster with a “big splash” deal especially with the way his team is playing right now. I do believe he will make a move or two to add some more veteran grit up front and/or a solid shutdown type defenseman (ie- Rob Blake or a lower budget player like Steve Staios) to play with Roman Hamrlik but beyond that, I would be surprised.
