Game Report

If it feels like a Habs win has been a long time coming, it has. Tonight’s overtime victory was only the second win for the Canadiens since Christmas.

The last Montreal win was almost one month ago in Dallas. Since then, the Canadiens have gone on a 10-game losing streak. Three of those losses have come under the direction of interim head coach Marty St. Louis, who recorded the first win of his coaching career.

It was a feel-good night for the coach and for veteran Paul Byron, playing his 500th NHL game. Byron opened the scoring with his first of the season on a play engineered by Artturi Lehkonen.

Jeff Petry played one of his better games of the season. The 34-year-old had two assists including setting up the game-winner, in 24 minutes of action. His play had to be reassuring to the scouts in attendance, as teams look to obtain his services for a playoff run this season.

It was also encouraging to catch a sighting of Brendan Gallagher. The 29-year-old has been a shell of his former self this season to date. While Gallagher didn’t appear on the scoring sheet, he was far more engaged than he has been at times this season.

Up Next

The Canadiens will head out for a one-game road trip in Long Island to face the New York Islanders on Sunday afternoon.

What Did They Say?

Post-game Quotes

Martin St. Louis

  • “There’s a lot of talent on this team and it’s just allowing them to use it and I think they feel they can do that and now we just need to manage when, when we do that and when sometimes the best play is no play.”
  • “I’m happier for my dad than I am for me. He was pretty stressed I hadn’t won yet, but I told him to chill and that it was coming.”

Josh Anderson

  • “You know what, it was a good feeling to come back in the locker room and hear music.”

  1. salut-bien chers amis allhabs,
    thoughts,observations,perspectif?
    great skating game-both teams.
new coach has discovered the secret to success?letting the boys play?
as the great jacques lemaire always said:
“don’t forget to back-check eh,if we lose the puck eh”.
    CH64 on defense looks good.
    goaler,montembaultCH35 playing well
    coach,play CH25 more,underutilised.10-12 minutes a game?he merits much more than that!!!
CH22 et CH25 showed chemistry/complicity as linemates previous, play them together?
    coach,play CH11 in overtime,svp
    CH62 is one of our indispensables.talent/skill underestimated.total team player.never complains,despite it all.infatiguable efforts/spirit.reminds me of saku koivu.
CH26,where would we be without jeff on our defense?who else can carry the puck out/start the play/lead the rush like him?he is our talisman back there.he recieves much un-merited criticism.in my humble estimations,he is our best player, point a la ligne.
referees still calling marginale/incidentale penalties?let the players fight thru the check a little eh?gone too far with the obstruction/interefrence project?
the re-build?who is next to go?it is great to acquire youth et draft picks for our veteran players.however, the youth and draft picks require veteran leadership et mentoring to develope.if we send away all of our veterans/leaders now,we will have to get some back, non?and how?by giving up “youth et draft picks”,,,to acquire them!!!
    merci pour l’ecoute
    portez-vous tous bien
    familleCH,malgres le tout
guyCH10 soit toujours avec-nous en prieres et pensees
