Malkin Tops All Habs All-Star Mock Draft

MONTREAL, QC. — With the 2012 NHL All-Star game set to begin this weekend, and with the All-Star draft happening this upcoming Thursday, we decided it would be fun here at All Habs Hockey Magazine to do our own little mock draft in anticipations of these events.

Fellow All Habs contributor Chantal and I went ahead and each picked our teams, all while respecting the NHL rules that are in place:

Rules:

  • Pick all goalies by round 10
  • Pick all defencemen by round 15
  • Phil Kessel cannot be picked last or Brian Burke will be put in Twitter jail for having a fit.

Our strategies were a little different I must say.

While I tried to enter the mind of Zdeno Chara, and predict which players he would pick in each round, Chantal went ahead and picked a winning team.

Next to each player, we left a comment as to why we picked the player, or believed they would be picked at that time.

Is there really anyway to judge who drafted the better team? I’m not sure there is, but in order to keep it fun, we will tally the goals and assists obtained by each player during the All-Star game, and with the totals number of points on each roster determining the winner.

The top scorer will get bragging rights and you can expect some trash talking on Twitter.

And now, here is the draft:

Chantal:
  • So hot right now, no easier first pick than him.
 T. Thomas (BOS) – G
Stevo:
  • Chara didn’t have a chance to see Timmy Thomas earlier this week as the Bruins visited the White House, so I expect a reunion.

Chantal:
  • You just know Malkin was dying for Alfie to pick him! Pick him!

Stevo:
  • Expecting some big Lupul influence to have Kessel get drafted very early in this one.

  • Who could resist that cute little baby face? He’s also pretty good at hockey.

Stevo:
  • I expect nothing less then for Chara to pick his Boston teammates as early as possible.

  • We have to counter the Chara shot with someone, that someone is Shea.

  • And there you have it. Could there be anything worse for a Habs fan than to see the Bruins and Leafs joining forces?

  • An obvious pick. Outstanding season with very little goal support.

Stevo:
  • After seeing Howard fight with the Blues’ players on Monday night, this one was a no brainer.

  • He’ll entertain the team with his witty quotes, and it avoids having Chara pick him. You know.

  • Zdeno Chara has probably never heard of Brian Elliott but he needs three goalies. Oh and, wow, what a season Elliott.

  • The flow, he’s got THE FLOW.

Stevo:
  • If my draft goes as planned which it won’t, expect players already picked to influence the draft as it goes along, like Boston and Toronto above. Toews playing with Kane makes sense, although against each other would be nice to see.

  • They played together for a few years in Boston so this wouldn’t be a surprise.
