Final Cuts

The Montreal Canadiens assigned five players to the Laval Rocket on Monday. They included forwards Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Jesse Ylonen, defensemen Justin Barron and Otto Leskinen, and goaltender Cayden Primeau.

Following practice, four players were invited to meet with general manager Kent Hughes. Defensemen Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris and Arber Xhekaj along with forward Juraj Slafkovsky were informed that they had made the team’s opening night roster.

Opening Night Roster

The Montreal Canadiens officially announced their roster for the 2022-23 regular season. 14 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders for a total of 22 players were included in the list, one short of the maximum roster size.

That spot will be filled by Arber Xhekaj, who had been temporarily assigned to Laval in a cap management move. Xhekaj will be recalled on Wednesday once Paul Byron is put on long-term injury reserve status. The 21-year-old defenseman will be available for Wednesday’s home opener but is not a lock to play.

Injury Update

On Monday, Christian Dvorak, Mike Hoffman and Nick Suzuki returned to practice after recovering from their injuries.

The Canadiens have placed forward Joel Armia on injured reserve. Armia will be out one to two weeks with an upper-body injury.

Forward Emil Heineman will out for six weeks with a thumb injury that was sustained at training camp.

Paul Byron is expected to be placed on long-term injury reserve on Wednesday.

Here is the Canadiens current injury list:

Joel Armia (upper-body) – 1-2 weeks
Paul Byron (hip) – indeterminate
Joel Edmundson (back) – indeterminate
Emil Heineman (finger) – 6 weeks
Logan Mailloux (shoulder) – day-to-day
Mike Matheson (lower-body) – day-to-day
Carey Price (knee) – indeterminate (LTIR)
