Game Report

Jeff Petry scored twice against his former team. Tomas Tatar netted two of his own and now has three goals to start the season. But it was Carey Price who shutdown the high octane offence of the Edmonton Oilers with 34 saves.

Price was also the Canadiens best penalty-killer making 10 saves with the Oilers going 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Edmonton had the NHL’s number one power-play last season.

Price stopped Connor McDavid on a first period breakaway for one of his numerous outstanding saves after the league’s best skater stole the puck and blew by defenceman Joel Edmundson.

Jake Evans had a solid bounce-back game scoring a short-handed goal after struggling in the season opener. Besides his goal of the season, Evans had four shots on goal and was 50 percent at the faceoff dot.

The same could be said about the Canadiens top line who weren’t a factor in Wednesday night’s game. In addition to the two goals by Tomas Tatar, Brendan Gallagher earned two assists. Phillip Danault had a tough night on faceoffs winning just 36 percent of his draws.

Busy Week

After securing three of a possible four points in their opening two games, the Canadiens will now play four games in six nights starting with a rematch with the Oilers on Monday night.

What Did They Say?

 Post-game Quotes
Claude Julien
  • “[Carey Price] had a big impact. We saw the scoring chances they managed to get and the way Carey reacted. He was excellent for us tonight. We did good things, but we have to continue to improve. They had too many chances at some points. We’ll try to improve that aspect of our game.”
Brendan Gallagher
  • “It could have been a different game if we don’t have [Carey Price} back there. Fortunately enough, we have a great one between the pipes to make those saves. He’s so calm and so cool he allows you to keep momentum on your side, and we’re pretty fortunate to play in front of him every single night.”

Carey Price

  • “You want to play against the best players in the world. Connor, in my opinion, is the best player in the world. He’s so talented, and with his speed and his hands and his vision, it’s a pleasure to share the ice with him.”

Jeff Petry

  • “We wanted to make sure we kept our foot on the gas and not give them anything to build off of for next game. I think that’s going to be an important aspect with the schedule that we have playing teams 2-3 times in a week.”
