Game Report

This team! The Canadiens had fallen into a losing streak that was within a whisker of equaling a 100 year-old franchise record. And they were also well on their way to locking down the last place position in the NHL standings with the accompanying silver lining that comes along with that.

Instead Habs fans cheered the Arizona Coyotes overtime win over Dallas which ensured that Montreal will finish last and will have the best odds (18.5 percent) at drafting first overall as determined by the NHL Draft Lottery taking place on May 10th.

The theme of this game was late period goals which provided three of the Canadiens four goals. This season Montreal was often on the opposite side of this ledger.

Ryan Poehling opened the scoring with 1:15 left in the first period. Jeff Petry scored the first of his two goals with just nine seconds left in the second period. And Petry scored the game winner with 31 seconds left in the contest.

Despite these two teams being at opposite ends of the standings, the playing field was leveled by the Rangers sitting out eight regulars plus star goaltender Igor Shesterkin.
