Game Report

What is the best way to illustrate just how completely the Canadiens were dominated in Philadelphia? One could mention the Habs turnovers, the way the Flyers controlled the neutral zone and the orange waves of odd man rushes.

But if a number if what you are looking for, how about this one: the Flyers had registered 30 shots by the 30 minute mark of the game. In fact, Philadelphia was outshooting the Canadiens 33-13 by the midpoint of the second period (including a 25-1 stretch.)

The Flyers were on track for a 60-shot game. They fell short of the mark, not due to a third period resurgence by the Canadiens, but because they could not sustain the pace. In fact, it had to be rather disheartening for the home team to have their way with the Habs only to find themselves in a 2-2 tie four minutes into the third period.

The sole reason that the Canadiens found themselves in the game at all: Carey Price.

Price was truly outstanding making numerous difficult saves with considerable traffic impeding him. Price stymied a breakaway by Travis Konecny, a penalty shot by Carsen Twarynski and a point blank opportunity by Sean Couturier. There were also unreal saves on Joel Farabee and Jakub Voracek that qualified for highlight of the night.

The penalty-kill deserves praise led by an exceptional effort from Artturi Lehkonen. The only blemish occurred seconds after the expiration of Tomas Tatar’s penalty. Paul Byron couldn’t coral a puck in the slot nor contain James van Riemsdyk for the Flyer’s second goal.

The Canadiens will have the day off on Friday returning to the ice to host the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

What Did They Say?

 Post-game Quotes
Claude Julien
  • “I think Carey kept us in the game. He faced a lot of shots. Our goalie made some big saves. We got a point thanks to him. Without him, I’m not sure we’d be leaving here with a point.”
Ben Chiarot
  • “We want to do better for our goalie. [Carey Price] was the best player on the ice. We have to do better for him. Without him, that game wouldn’t have even been close win the beginning of the game.”
  • “He stood on his head. The first period and a half probably weren’t our best. We didn’t really have our legs and they were taking it to us. They were outshooting us by a wide margin, and he kept us in there all game.”

Nick Cousins

  • “[Carey Price] stood on his head. The first period and a half weren’t our best and they were outshooting us by wide margin and he kept us in there.”

Shea Weber

  • “Our goalie held us in there and gave us a chance to win tonight. [Carey Price] was by far our best player.”
