After riding high on a four-game win streak, the Canadiens found themselves struggling throughout their western road trip this week. They didn’t have much time to celebrate their shutout of the Maple Leafs in the previous game before being dealt the same hand by the San Jose Sharks on Monday night. It was trade deadline day, and Jeff Petry found himself in the Habs lineup just hours after being traded from Edmonton. However the team around him didn’t display their best efforts as a whole, and the Sharks took full advantage. Final score: Sharks, 4-0. (Read our full recap here: Price Can’t Do It Alone)
Wednesday night’s game in Anaheim almost left the Canadiens with another goose egg on the scoreboard. Jiri Sekac made his presence known on his new team, with a hard hit on P. K. Subban. Max Pacioretty noted after the game that the team needed to do better about not shooting from just the perimeter. A sloppy goal by Alex Galchenyuk in the third period saved the Habs from a back-to-back shutout, but the team again looked unorganized and lackluster. Final score: Ducks, 3-1. The next night brought the Habs to Los Angeles, Dustin Tokarski in net, and another dismal opening period. After finding themselves down by two goals early on, Tom Gilbert potted an unusually smooth goal which seemed to give the visiting team’s offense some much-needed inspiration. Brendan Gallagher quickly followed up with a goal of his own, and Pacioretty put one past Jonathan Quick in the third. Saturday night finally brought some redemption for the Canadiens, as they ended their road trip with a visit to the Arizona Coyotes. The game went scoreless for nearly two periods, but Lars Eller put the Habs on the board with what would eventually become the game-winning goal. An empty-netter by Gallagher sealed the win, with Carey Price earning yet another shutout to add to his tally. Final score: Canadiens, 2-0. The Canadiens return to the Bell Centre on Tuesday night to welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first of a three-game week.
