The Canadiens’ western road trip began on Tuesday night in Vancouver. Things got ugly pretty quickly, as the Canucks scored three goals in the first period. It took the Habs more than two periods to get on the scoreboard, when Torrey Mitchell finally scored a goal. The historic win streak came abruptly to an end on a night when the whole team looked flat. Final score: Canucks, 5-1. (Read our full recap here: Habs Held Back From Record-Tying Win)
Thursday night took the Montreal team to Edmonton, where things looked to get back on track. Alexander Semin found himself watching the game from the press box, which gave Paul Byron a chance in the lineup. This time it was the Habs who scored three goals in the first period from Brendan Gallagher, Mitchell, and Alex Galchenyuk. But then things got sloppy again, and the Oilers were able to shift the momentum their way. Four unanswered goals dealt the Habs their second consecutive loss. Final score: Oilers, 4-3. No rest for the weary, as the Canadiens took to the ice again on Friday night for a matchup against the Calgary Flames. Mike Condon took over in net, and Dale Weise started the scoring in the first period. Nathan Beaulieu and Devante Smith-Pelly each tallied a goal in the second period, while Weise potted his second of the night. Byron made his mark in the third with a shorthanded goal and Weise sealed the deal with his first career hat trick. Final score: Canadiens, 6-2. (Read our full recap here: Weise is the Word)
The team came home on Sunday night to face the Winnipeg Jets at the Bell Centre. News broke early in the morning that Carey Price would be out for the week with a lower body injury. That meant Condon moved temporarily to the starter position, and Dustin Tokarski was called up from St. John’s. Byron kicked off the night with another shortie, and Thomas Fleischmann racked up two even-strength goals. David Desharnais got on the board in the second period, as did Lars Eller. It was a definitive win for the home team. Final score: Canadiens, 5-1. (Read our full recap here: Flash Takes Down the Jets)
