Game Report

One day the Ottawa Senators are going to be a legitimately strong team. As we witnessed in the first period, the Senators are a quick squad who do have budding talent. They may have given the Habs fits this season but Ottawa isn’t ready to put it all together on a consistent basis.

With the Canadiens down by two goals with fourteen minutes left in the third, it was the home team who found the energy to dominant the Senators despite playing on consecutive nights. Montreal outshot Ottawa 18-3, scoring twice in a six minute span to tie the game.

After Nick Suzuki’s third period goal was waived off due to goaltender interference by Corey Perry, Suzuki went back to work setting up Tyler Toffoli for his 27th goal of the season.

The stage was then set for the dramatic ending to the contest with Cole Caufield scoring the game-winner, his first goal in the NHL. It was also the re-emergence of Jeff Petry who scored for the first time in 23 games and found Caufield for the OT winner.

Cayden Primeau received the goal support he needed for his first win of the season. Primeau had an up and down game making some solid saves but sending far too many rebounds into the slot. Primeau was able to spell Jake Allen for a game but it’s clear that he needs at least two more seasons in the AHL to develop his consistency.

Up Next

The Canadiens continue their matchups against Ontario teams next week with the Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre on Monday and then three road games against Ottawa and Toronto.

Post-game Quotes

Dominique Ducharme

  • “As a team, I think we’ve overcome an identity crisis. We have a better understanding of everyone’s role. We handled things well for a second straight game. We have to keep that recipe going.”

Jeff Petry

  • “It’s important to get the wins. Like I said the other day, when we play our game, when we play our style, our fate’s in our hands. Credit to us tonight, going down 2-0 again and finding a way to battle back. I think the last two efforts show we’re willing to put in whatever it takes here to make sure that we control our own destiny. “

Nick Suzuki

  • “We had confidence to come back. We felt like we were in the game the whole time and we never got too down on ourselves. I think that’s something that we were doing before, but lately we’ve tried to have a better bench, keep the mood up and it’s really translated well coming back into those games.”

Cole Caufield

  • “You really don’t know what to expect. I didn’t see it coming. But, the guys have been great to me, so I couldn’t be happier with the reaction after the silent treatment. It’s all pretty surreal right now.”
