Game Report

Twenty-eight seconds into the match, Brendan Gallagher was assessed a double-minor for high sticking. Fourteen seconds later, the Senators opened the scoring on the power-play. And from that point on, the Canadiens were expending energy chasing the game.

After two solid defensive efforts earlier in the week, Montreal offered up one of their most mistake-filled games of the season. Turnovers leading to odd-man rushes by Ottawa and weak positional play in their own zone yielded a bounty of grade ‘A’ chances by the Senators. Carey Price was left on his own, and was forced to make a number of big saves.

As interim coach Dominique Ducharme said post-game, “We gave them gifts.”

Jeff Petry was the most generous in the gift-giving department, finishing the game with a minus-5 rating. It was one of the worst games in recent memory for Petry.

Brief moments of positive play came from Josh Anderson and Nick Suzuki. In a game such as this, it is hard to properly evaluate, but Corey Perry didn’t look like a good fit with his two new line-mates.

Ducharme wasn’t willing to concede that his squad, when not much was going right 5-on-5, could have been helped by better special teams play. Ottawa had a short-handed goal and one on the power-play. After starting well under the new coaching regime, the Canadiens power-play has been anemic.

The Canadiens will have a day off on Sunday. They return to action on Monday when Montreal hosts the Edmonton Oilers at the Bell Centre.

Post-game Quotes

Dominique Ducharme

  • “It was a bad night. We weren’t good. We weren’t good execution-wise and we weren’t good without the puck. We weren’t good when it came to winning our puck battles. We weren’t good.”
  • “We weren’t good without the puck. We didn’t communicate well. We can try to find 1,000 reasons to explain things, but we clearly weren’t good. We didn’t have a good night.”

Tyler Toffoli

  • “It was unfortunate. We were kind of just chasing the game the whole time. Obviously, Gally didn’t mean to take that penalty. His stick kind of got up a little bit, and from then on we were chasing it. That’s not the recipe for success in any game against any team.”

Jeff Petry

  • “They came out harder and we didn’t match their intensity the way we did in Ottawa. I thought they were on us quick and I don’t think we made the best reads.”
