Game Report

The honeymoon is definitely over. Good vibes and inspirational speeches can only last so long before reality sets in. The Canadiens are on a six-game losing streak and are losers of seven of their last eight games.

As interim head coach, Marty St. Louis has hit 20 losses with a record of 12-16-4. And the team coached by an offensive hockey mind is having trouble putting the puck in the net.

The good news is that Carey Price has been rock solid in his two starts since returning. Price has made the tough saves looked easy, controlled the pace of the game, and helped his defensemen move the puck. Price has also brought a major dose of leadership to the team on and off the ice.

What Price can’t do is score and neither can his teammates. Habs skaters have now gone three full games without scoring a single goal. That’s nine periods of hockey going back to Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Of the forwards in tonight’s lineup, Mathieu Perreault won’t be returning. Perhaps Laurent Dauphin can find a home with an AHL affiliate of another team. And we’ll see if Kent Hughes can work his magic to divest the team of the contracts of Mike Hoffman, Christian Dvorak and Brendan Gallagher.

But the first change in the off-season should begin with the coaching staff. It’s clear that Alex Burrows is not an NHL-calibre coach and his power-play schemes have been dreadful.

Up Next

The Canadiens will complete their four-game home stand as they take on the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis

  • “The first minutes were difficult, but we got back together and played a very good game. It’s a shame there was a disallowed goal. We were simply unable to score.”

Carey Price

  • “It was less emotional than the first start and I was more comfortable in general. It’s less chaotic in front of me. After a long absence, it’s not easy to read the game well, but I already feel that things are slowing down in front of me.”

Tyler Pitlick

  • “It’s hard to lose, but we played good games, good periods. We try to keep morale high. We played a good game today. The puck didn’t go our way, but we fought well against one of the good teams in the league. We hope to gain confidence with this performance and turn things around in the next games.”

    pitlick,hoffer,cauldfield,poehling,evans,byron,suzuki,gallagher
all very good carrying the puck.
toughness and grit looks good too.pitlick, pezzetta
defense is more mobile.exiting the zone has improved.
    goaltending is back!!!
very good point regarding coach st.louis:”the honeymoon”is over!time to report to the boss.assessment/evaluation time!!!
what will our “sammy pollock’s office” determine/decide?
he was brought in under failing circumstances.play-offs a non-issue.and the bench was broken.his job?to repair the bench!implement philosophy.mental strenght.
confidence and faith amongst the team.and skating,,,lots of skating!!!that he has done.but philosophy requires complimentary structure, tactics and adjustements?is he being out-coached?yes.”scotty bowman” like tactical expertise was not a prerequisite, this time around?
he is the 1st to profess his lack of game/player management skills/experience.will he remain?
in gorton and hughes we trust,,,(we have too!!!)
    cheers,
    familleCH,toujours
