Game Report

A Canadiens goaltender had not shutout the Chicago Blackhawks in Montreal since Patrick Roy on March 19, 1988. Until tonight. Jake Allen registered the first shutout of the season by a Canadiens goaltender.

It’s not to say that Allen was severely tested on this night. The anemic Blackhawks attack managed 22 shots on goal and just five high-danger scoring chances in this game. Chicago also went 0-for-4 on the power play, including 65 seconds with a 5-on-3 advantage.

But with the Habs up 1-0 near the end of the first period, Allen made a right toe save on Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou who had sprung in all alone after a bad giveaway by David Savard. It was a turning point in this game.

The first 40 minutes of this game was characterized by sloppy, low-event hockey. But the third period was clearly won by the Canadiens. Their aggressive approach paid off in the final frame as the Hawks began to break down resulting in three Habs markers.

Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak each had a goal and an assist. Dvorak was a dominant 90 percent at the faceoff dot. Justin Barron scored his second goal in the last three games.

The Canadiens have now won three straight games for only the second time this season.
