Sundin edges closer to return after physical

    An excerpt from the Globesports.com article by Tim Wharnsby who writes about Mats Sundin and his recent activities:

    Mats Sundin has taken the first step toward a return to the NHL.

    The 37-year-old free-agent centre underwent a physical exam at a Toronto hospital yesterday — necessary to begin a rigorous period of training to continue his hockey career.

    Sundin, who spent the past 13 NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, returned to the city last week and soon is expected to travel to Los Angeles to begin a two-week on-ice training stint.
    It is believed that after those two weeks are up, he will begin talking to NHL teams to determine the best fit for him.

    1. Yawn! I suppose that this is ‘news’ but part of me wishes that AllHabs could be a SFZ (Sundin Free Zone). JP Barry and Sundin have milked this story for far too long. Someone who is still searching all over Sweden for the passion to play the greatest game in the world doesn’t deserve the attention. The media hype that Sundin generated far outweighs his value as a hockey player.

      It was news in the sense that hockey fans finally know he is starting his “great comeback”.

      Any further Sundin news will appear in the sidebar section as he is a non issue for the Habs and to a lesser extent the fans who have moved on from the Sundin situation……..I guess you can call it a CDNS (Canadiens Don’t Need Sundin)situation….LOL.

I said back in the summer that I thought Sundin would play an abbreviated season similar to Forsberg, Selanne, Neidermeyer, etc. Gainey decided that paying out $4 million for a full season of Robert Lang was preferable than spending it on 2/3 of a season from Sundin (including playoffs). Personally, I can’t see the point of Lang at that price, not to mention the high second round draft pick they gave up for his rights.

    5. I don’t know that either will make a huge difference, but since the money seemed to be burning a hole in Bob’s pocket, yeah, I think it would be better spent on Sundin for half a season and the playoffs.

      There is absolutely nothing about Robert Lang that screams “difference maker!”. Gainey overpaid for his services, both in terms of salary, and assets.

      There were too many intangibles
      out of Gainey’s control which could have easily worked against him.

      Gainey had no control over the situation and there was no guarantee Sundin would sign with Montreal, if he would play at all.

      Let’s remember, Gainey had a window of opportunity to sign the Big Swede after the draft but Sundin declined at the time.

      Lang has played reasonably well and wants to be here. Granted, Sundin would have had a greater impact but that’s all hypothetical
      now, isn’t it.

      Anyhow, if the Rangers can unload some salary from their roster, Sundin will be a Ranger within the next month.
