Game Report

It took just 294 days for the Montreal Canadiens to go from playing in the Stanley Cup Final to clinch last place in the league this season. About the same the Habs were locking down the 32nd spot, the Florida Panthers were capturing the President’s Trophy.

Which set up a best versus worst as a fitting finale at the Bell Centre on Friday night.

The Panthers rested 10 regulars, and while Anton Lundell and Gustav Forsling were in the lineup, the pair didn’t see a second of action. In addition, Florida turned to Jonas Johansson, who had played one previous game for the Panthers this season and one game for the AHL affiliate the Charlotte Checkers.

So with that backdrop set, the Canadiens were afforded a golden opportunity to end the season in style. And oh, did they ever! Montreal routed the Panthers generating their highest output of the season and reached several individual milestones.

In his 10th NHL game, Jordan Harris scored his first NHL goal. He was the seventh Canadien to score their first NHL goal this season. Harris got the ball rolling and his teammates quickly followed scoring three goals in 2:33.

Montreal had a 3-0 lead before the five minute mark of the game.

Brendan Gallagher scored his first goal in 12 games, a power-play marker. Mathieu Perreault had a goal and an assist in what could be the final NHL game of his career. Tyler Pitlick scored his first goal as a Canadien. 

Cole Caufield scored his 21st, 22nd and 23rd goals of the season for his first NHL hat trick.

And perhaps, most importantly for this franchise, the “CA-REY, CA-REY” chants returned to the Bell Centre. Price was outstanding making his 700th NHL start, making 37 saves for his first win of the season.

The Canadiens have completed their 82-game schedule. All eyes will turn to the NHL Draft Lottery on May 10th where Montreal will have an 18.5 percent chance of securing the first overall pick.
