The last time the Habs were in Winnipeg…

The Montreal Canadiens haven’t been to Winnipeg to play the Jets since December 12, 1995.

The Canadiens won 6-5.

Patrick Roy and Habs captain Mike Keane had been traded less than three weeks earlier. Pierre Turgeon had been named the team’s new captain. Kris King wore the C for the Jets.

Shane Doan was a rookie playing for the Jets.
Montreal’s first-round draft pick that year, Terry Ryan, was not yet playing in the NHL.
Teemu Selanne was playing his fourth NHL season.

There’s a chance that a six-year-old Jonathan Toews would have been interested in the game. Same goes for an eight-year-old Carey Price and (probably not) a four-year-old Evander Kane. The game took place on Andrew Ladd’s 10th birthday.

Maybe one of those boys had been to the movies recently to see Toy Story. The top-grossing movie that year was Batman Forever.

The #1 song on the radio was “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men.

Jean Chrétien was serving his first term as Prime Minister of Canada.

Canada had lost an NHL team, the Quebec Nordiques, the previous season, bringing the number of Canadian teams down to seven.

How things have changed.
