Game Report

The Montreal Canadiens hold the dubious honour of the second most penalty minutes per game in the NHL. The Senators rank sixth most in the same category. So it’s not a surprise that this was a penalty-filled contest.

However only one team was able to leverage their man advantage opportunities. Ottawa went 2-for-7 on the power-play while the Canadiens came up empty. The Senators have the sixth best power-play in the league while the Habs are dead last with the 32nd ranked PP squad.

Shane Pinto opened the scoring just 1:28 into the second period which was quickly followed by Ottawa’s two power-play goals. The Sens had scored 10 goals in the past six games via the power-play.

The Canadiens pushed back in the third period with goals from Kirby Dach and Christian Dvorak but it wasn’t enough.

After the game, it was ironic that Marty St. Louis almost lost his composure explaining that Dach can’t lose his composure (even though his penalties were questionable.) But the head coach needs to take responsibility for having the worst power-play in the league and leading an undisciplined team.

Riding a three-game winning streak the Senators find themselves trailing the Habs by just two points.

Up Next

The Canadiens return to Montreal to host the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

What Did They Say?

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis on Kirby Dach

  • “His misconduct penalty, you can’t do that. The other two penalties he got… Anyway.”
  • “You saw the game. You have to control your emotions and it’s hard. It’s hard for everyone. You have to try to control that.”

Christian Dvorak

  • “We knew they had a good power play and we took too many penalties. They took advantage of it. We were the best team at five against five.”

Kirby Dach

  • “I have to accept the consequences of my penalties. The times I got them weren’t very good.”
