Welcome Perreault, Adieu Perry | HEADLINES

Habs News: Montreal Canadiens, Marc Bergevin, NHL, Corey Perry, Mike Hoffman, Mathieu Perreault, Charlie Lindgren

ROCKET SPORTS MEDIA | MONTREAL, QC. — Day two of the free agent shopping spree saw Marc Bergevin add one depth forward and say goodbye to another. Here are your Habs Headlines.

Mike Hoffman

Newly-signed Canadiens forward Mike Hoffman met with the media on Thursday afternoon.

“There were other options, but there’s nothing like playing hockey in Canada, let alone Montreal. Being an Original Six team, the fans, the atmosphere and the city, it just has everything that you want as a hockey player. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of playing in the Bell Centre in front of all the fans. Then obviously the hockey part of it, they’ve got a great hockey team. They’ve got some great young talent that’s coming up and they’re going to be good for a long time, so it was a pretty easy decision for me.”

Mathieu Perreault

The Montreal Canadiens have signed left winger Mathieu Perreault to a one-year contract worth $950,000. The 33-year-old Perreault skated with the Winnipeg Jets in 2020-’21 recording nine goals, 10 assists for 19 points in 56 games. Perreault played eight playoff games registering two points.

Corey Perry

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed forward Corey Perry to a two-year contract worth $1 million per season. The 36-year-old Perry was an unrestricted free agent after Marc Bergevin chose not to extend his contract. At his media availability, the Canadiens general manager said that he had made a new offer to Perry once free agency opened, but admitted that he would have liked to offer more.

The sticking point that prevented Perry’s return to Montreal was that Bergevin was not willing to offer a second year. Perry was looking to play for a contender and to have some stability for his family being located in the same place for two years.

Perry had a successful season with the Canadiens in 2020-’21 recording nine goals, 12 assists for 21 points in 49 games. Perry added four goals and six assists in 22 playoff games.

Perry will return to the Bell Centre on December 7th as the Canadiens host the Lightning in a rematch of Stanley Cup finalists.

Charlie Lindgren

The St. Louis Blues have signed former Canadiens goaltender Charlie Lindgren to a one-year contract for the 2020-21 season.

More Laval signings

The Laval Rocket signed two players to one-year, one-way AHL contracts on Thursday.

Forward Jean-Christophe Beaudin, 24, skated last season with the AHL’s Belleville Senators (Ottawa Senators) registering six goals, 10 assists for 16 points in 34 games.

Forward Brandon Gigac, 23, played with the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen (Winnipeg Jets) in 2020-21 tallying 10 goals, 17 assists for 27 points in 35 games.
