Game Report

The Canadiens goal drought is over! After being blanked for two consecutive games plus the first period of tonight’s game, Montreal exploded with a four-goal second period. And they have the penalty-killers to thank for the offense with two goals coming with the Canadiens were shorthanded.

Montreal also ended a four-game losing streak.

This was a classic let-down game for the Capitals, playing their first game after being officially eliminated from the NHL playoffs. And Washington was down to a lineup of 17 skaters, with Anthony Mantha a last minute injury scratch.

But it was the Caps who opened the scoring as Dylan Strome cleanly beat Sam Montembeault just over five minutes into the contest. The Canadiens dominated possession and the shot counter for the first period but went to the intermission trailing by a goal.

Joel Armia was star in this match almost doubling his goal total in a single game. Nick Suzuki also had a strong game. The captain’s second period goal awakened the Habs offense ending the goalless streak at over 140 minutes.

The Canadiens have just one home game left when the Boston Bruins visit the Bell Centre one week from tonight in the final match of the regular season.

What Did They Say?

Post-game Quotes

Marty St. Louis

  • “I liked our first period. This is one of our best lately. But after a good first, it was to see which way it would go, said St-Louis. ‘Suzy’ went for a shorthanded goal that lifted the team.”

Joel Armia

  • “We’ve accomplished a lot of good things on the ice. We played a very good match, each period.”

Johnathan Kovacevic on Joel Armia

  • “His skills and work ethic are beyond doubt. It’s not easy when you often miss games due to injuries. It’s hard to be consistent. But his approach is flawless in every game.”
