MONTREAL, QC — The Canadiens announced Monday the hiring of Shane Churla as Chief Amateur Scout. He will report directly to Trevor Timmins.ChurlaSL_061412

Churla, 47 years old, was hired as a scout by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2000, before joining the Dallas Stars organization in 2005.

“He takes this very seriously, he’s very passionate about it”, said Lee Jackson, Dallas Stars Director of player personnel, in June 2012.

“It was more so staying in the game. Like many other people, it’s been my life, being in hockey in one form or another,” said Churla. “My objectives are no different than when I was a player, I want to win a championship. Now, I am going about it in a different application. The desire is as high as when I was a player.”

Churla was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the sixth round, in 1985. He played 11 NHL seasons, including eight with Dallas. In 488 games, he scored 26 goals, 45 assists and logged 2 301 penalty minutes, 1 833 of those in Dallas, a franchise record.

He also enjoyed stints with the Calgary Flames, Minnesota North Stars, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers.
