Game Report

The night started well for the visitors, in large part due to the line of Ryan Poehling, Michael Pezzetta, and Alex Belzile. In their first appearance, Pezzetta set up Poehling for a wrist shot from the faceoff cirle that found its way behind Alex Nedeljkovic. On their next shift, Pezzetta obtained a scoring chance as he found himself on a breakaway. 

The rest of the team picked up on their energy and played a good period until Jeff Petry pushed Dylan Larkin into Jake Allen in the final minute. It was another bad decision for the Canadiens’ top defenceman. Allen told the club’s therapist that he felt fine, but the NHL concussion spotter pulled him off the ice to run through tests. The Canadiens interim number one goalie never returned. 

Detroit took advantage of a cold Samuel Montembeault and beat him with their first two shots in a span of 45 seconds. Monteambeault would like to have both those goals back, despite the defensive breakdown in front of him on the second goal.

As the period progressed, Montembeault gained confidence and made several key saves. The Canadiens started to play well in front of their goalie. 

Early in the third period, Artturi Lehkonen made a no-look pass from his knees right to Chris Wideman for the tying goal. Brendan Gallagher was inches away from scoring the go-ahead goal after redirecting Wideman’s shot straight onto the post. 

In overtime, Dylan Larkin scored the game winning goal on an odd man rush created after Ben Chiarot‘s pass attempt was intercepted deep in Detroit’s zone.

What’s Next?

The Canadiens obtained at least one point in the standings for a third consecutive game. After the game, Cayden Primeau was recalled from the Rocket in case that Allen is not able to play in Boston on Sunday. This week, Primeau recorded a shutout against Belleville on Wednesday and was solid in Saturday’s match against the Comets.
