Canadiens claim Samuel Montembeault off waivers

Montreal Canadiens Media Release

MONTREAL, QC – The Montreal Canadiens announced Saturday that the team claimed 24-year-old goaltender Samuel Montembeault off waivers. Montembeault, a third-round draft pick by the Florida Panthers in 2015, played 25 career NHL games with the Panthers (9-8-3, 3.20 GAA/.892 SV%). He was cut from their training camp on Friday, with the intention of sending him to Florida’s new AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

Most of Montembeault’s success has been at the AHL level where, over the course of 104 games averages a 3.17 GAA and a 0.900 SV%. The bulk of those games were played with the Springfield Thunderbirds, where he was an AHL All-Star in 2019. In 2020-21, however, Montembeault suited up for the Syracuse Crunch (13 GP, 2.86 GAA/.898 SV%) due to the Thunderbirds opting out of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 6’3″, 207 lb. goaltender was born in Becancour, QC and played four years for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. He was named to the QMJHL Second All-Star Team in 2016-17.

It’s unclear at time of this writing where Montembeault will first report. Laval’s training camp begins on Monday, October 4.
