All Habs Headlines: Friday July 20, 2012

On this day in hockey history… In 2010, the Montreal Canadiens hired Randy Cunneyworth as head coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs.  Cunneyworth became an assistant coach in Montreal in 2011, before taking over as interim coach after Jacques Martin‘s firing.  Not retained by Marc Bergevin, Cunneyworth continues to seek employment at present.

Gomez Scores: Yesterday, Scott Gomez participated in his annual charity golf event, the Scott Gomez Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament, in Anchorage, Alaska.  On the par-3 sixth hole, Gomez hit a hole-in-one, which won him a brand new $50,000 Acura MD X.  This was the sixth edition of the event, preceded Wednesday by a charity dinner and auction.

Pacioretty a Negotiator: When the NHLPA released a list of the 15 players that attended yesterday’s CBA negotiation meeting with the NHL, one name stuck out to Habs’ fans: that of Max Pacioretty.  When the Players’ Association first revealed its 31-man negotiating committee, the only Canadiens on the list were Mathieu Darche and Chris Campoli, both currently unrestricted free agents.  Since that time, in addition to Pacioretty, P.K. Subban has attended some of the Association’s meetings as well.  This will be a valuable experience for Montreal’s young leaders, and is one that testifies to off-ice respect and maturity of the players.

Campoli Waiting: Ex-Habs d-man Chris Campoli hopes to play in the NHL in 2012-13, but he told TVASports’s L.A. Lariviere this week that things are quiet at the moment.  One year ago, Campoli had to wait till training camp, when concerns over injuries and rookies on the Montreal back-end forced Pierre Gauthier to send a lifeline his direction.  With other veterans like Michal RozsivalPavel KubinaCarlo Colaiacovo, and Jaroslav Spacek still on the market, he may find himself in a similar situation again this year.

Budaj Visits Price: Rumours flew this week when it was reported that Peter Budaj‘s goalie sticks were spotted (and photographed) at the Vancouver airport.  No, he isn’t being dealt to the Canucks to back-up Corey Schneider after a Roberto Luongo trade; he is in British Columbia to join Carey Price for practice.  The two are training together so that both may be supervised by goaltending coach Pierre Groulx and conditioning coach Pierre Allard.

► Fischer Heads Abroad: Though he’ll remain the worst Montreal first round selection in quite some time, defenseman David Fischer has extended his professional hockey career.  A productive ECHL blueliner, Fischer helped the Florida Everblades win the Kelley Cup championship this past season, though he had to leave the team twice during the post-season to tend to his ill mother.  Rather than return to Florida, Fischer signed a contract this week with the Heilbronner Falken of the second tier league in Germany.
