MONTREAL CANADIENS TO HOST 2022 NHL DRAFT

National Hockey League Media Release

MONTREAL, QC – This week the National Hockey League announced the Montreal Canadiens as hosts of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. It marks the first time the Draft returns to Montreal in 13 years. The organization last hosted the event at the Bell Centre in 2009.

Originally scheduled for 2020, a year which forced the Draft to be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadiens have patiently waited for this opportunity. “…we would like to thank the NHL for this vote of confidence, which will allow us to finally present this major event after two virtual editions, while providing an unforgettable experience to several young players,” said France Margaret Bélanger, President of Sports and Entertainment of the CH Group.

Fans Set to Return

The first round of the 2022 NHL Draft will be held Thursday, July 7th. Rounds two through seven follow on Friday, July 8th. The Thursday-Friday schedule is a change from the typical Friday-Saturday format of the event in past years. Current plans include a full arena, with scouts, coaches, and general managers filling the Draft floor while fans and media pack the stands.

“Montreal, the site of the first NHL Draft in 1963, is a wonderful place to bring the NHL family together and to focus on the future of our game as our Clubs call the names of top prospects from around the world,” said Gary Bettman, NHL commissioner.

This will be the 27th NHL Draft held in Montreal in 59 years.
