MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens and Molson/Coors introduced Thursday the recipients of the Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence and Merit for the 2012-13 season. The awards are presented annually to hockey players at the amateur level who best combined hockey performances with academic excellence.
The program was introduced in 1985 with the objective of encouraging sports and academic excellence for players competing in all three major amateur hockey leagues in the province of Quebec; the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), member schools of the Canadian Interuniversity Sports in Quebec (CIS) and the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League (QJAAAL). Honorees are selected by a jury made of representatives from the sports media, the hockey and education communities. Molson/Coors awards recipients of the Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence a $6,000 scholarship over a 3-year period, and the beneficiary of the Guy Lafleur Awards of Merit earns a $1,000 scholarship.

QUEBEC INTERUNIVERSITY SPORTS
Patrick Delisle-Houde (McGill University Redmen)
Patrick Delisle-Houde, is a 21-year old student native of Quebec City who was recruited out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he played four seasons with the Rimouski Océanic (2008-2011) and the Moncton Wildcats (2011-2012) earning 169 points, including 66 goals, in 254 regular season games. In 2012-13, his first season as a Redmen, Patrick had a team-leading 31 points, eight of them goals, in 37 games overall. During regular season play, he led the team with 24 points, including 18 assists in 26 contests. He capped off the season by earning a berth on the league’s OUA all-rookie team and winning the Friends of McGill Hockey Trophy awarded annually to the team’s trop freshman. In class, Delisle-Houde completed nine courses and earning 24 credits over the school year, achieving a grade-point average of 3.52 (the equivalent of 88%) as a physical education freshman. He merited the CIS Academic All-Canadian honours and qualified for the Principal’s Student athlete honour roll. In the community, he volunteered for hospitals as the Rimouski Regional Hospital in 2011 and made numerous school visits in 2012 for Moncton’s “Reading is Wild” program, which encourage reading among youths.

Charles-David Beaudoin (Voltigeurs de Drummondville)
A Drummondville native, Charles-David Beaudoin is an important part of the Voltigeurs defensive squad and an outstanding student enrolled in the social sciences program at Cégep Drummondville. The first selection of the Voltigeurs in the QMJHL Draft in 2011, Beaudoin set high standards for himself right from the start stating that his goal was to help his team reach the top and for him to successfully complete his Cégep diploma in two years. And to no one’s surprise, that’s exactly what the determined Beaudoin achieved. With a commitment second to none, he maximized his efforts both in the classroom and on the ice. After three seasons in the QMJHL and a Cégep diploma in his back pocket with an 80% grade percentage average, he is aiming at taking his team to the top of the standings while studying towards a Bachelor in administration. A stay-at-home defenseman, Charles-Davis is a born leader, the type of person who makes everyone around him better. A genuine ambassador not only for his team but for the entire Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, he is also actively involved in an array of community initiatives and charities. In each of his first two seasons with the Voltigeurs, he served as Honorary President of the Voltigeurs’ Annual Blood Drive and also lends a helping hand to the Sûreté du Québec police force promoting proper driving code ethics.

QUEBEC JUNIOR AAA HOCKEY LEAGUE
Alexis Guilbault (Les Lauréats du Cégep Saint-Hyacinthe)
A skilled centreman with outstanding playmaking abilities and a flair for scoring goals, Alexis Guilbault played two seasons with the Collège Antoine Girouard Gaulois recording 55 points in 85 regular season games before moving on to the Cégep Saint-Hyacinthe Lauréats for the 2012-13 season. With a 50-point production, including 15 goals last season, he was voted the league’s top rookie. The former fifth round selection of the QMJHL Shawinigan Cataractes in 2011, Guilbault was also a first year student in the social sciences program at the Saint-Hyacinthe Cégep in 2012-13 and did well with a 75 % average grade. A dedicated young man, Alexis was involved in community events in Saint-Hyacinthe as well as Varennes, where he currently lives, providing tips and technical support to young minor hockey players. He also volunteered with the local chapter of the Quebec Breakfast Club.
