Week five of the season kicked off Monday night with the Canadiens continuing their winning streak with a 3-0 shutout win over the Carolina Hurricanes. In an extremely slow game, which went scoreless for two periods, the Habs finally lit the lamp in the 3rd period with goals from the three P’s: Brandon Prust, Tomas Plekanec, and Max Pacioretty. Winning his tenth career shutout (and his first in a Habs uniform), Peter Budaj made 19 saves to keep the Hurricanes off the score sheet.
The Canadiens traveled to New York City the following night to take on the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. It was Brandon Prust’s first appearance in the Garden since leaving the Rangers organization. Again the first period resulted in no goals for either team, but Max Pacioretty put the Habs on the board with a goal in the second period. Alex Galchenyuk scored his second goal of the season, and Raphael Diaz potted an empty netter to seal the Habs win 3-1 over the Rangers.
Thursday night’s matchup against the New York Islanders brought an end to the Canadiens’ five-game winning streak. The Habs went up early in the first period with a goal by Travis Moen and a powerplay goal from Max Pacioretty. After putting the puck in the net again in the second period, Pacioretty has scored four goals in the last three games. The Islanders tied the game in the third period, forcing an overtime period where one of their rookies, Thomas Hickey, would score his first NHL goal to clinch the win. On a positive note, Carey Price stopped 21 shots and the Canadiens outshot the Islanders 14-3 in the opening period.
The week wrapped up on Saturday night as the Habs took on the Rangers once again, this time at the Bell Centre. With 17 saves, Carey Price was awarded his second shutout of the season, with a final score of 3-0. After a sluggish first period, the second period proved to be beneficial to the Habs with Erik Cole, Alex Galychenyuk, and Lars Eller each scoring a goal. The Canadiens retained their lead in the Eastern Conference and will travel to Ottawa on Monday night to take on the Senators.
Head coach Michel Therrien was very pleased with the performance of his club, saying “We had four games this week. We travelled too. We picked up seven points out of eight. That’s pretty exceptional.”
