On this day in hockey history… 1977 – Rod Gilbert scored a goal and added an assist to become the first player in NY Rangers history (and the 11th in NHL history) to score 1,000 career points.
1980 – Washington beat Montreal 3-1 to end the Canadiens’ 34 game unbeaten streak against the Caps. Washington had been 0-32-2 against Montreal since entering the NHL in October 1974.

GAMEDAY: All Habs Headlines

► The infamous back-to-back: 

  • The Montreal Canadiens are playing their second game in two nights as they faceoff against the New York Rangers, following their 3-0 victory at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes.
  • The Canadiens will be playing their third game in four nights, while the well rested Rangers will only be at their second game in the past five nights. This definitely could play a factor and Michel Therrien will need to use all four lines effectively and properly manage his team’s ice-time in order for the Habs to make it through all three periods.

► Pacioretty breaks the ice, Cam Ward looks for rock to crawl under:

  • Max Pacioretty finally broke the ice and scored his first goal of the season in Monday night’s game against Carolina, but it probably wasn’t exactly how he envisioned it.
  • Just after crossing his own blue line and before reaching the red line, Pacioretty lobbed the puck into the Carolina zone. Cam Ward who stayed a little too far back in his net was unable to adjust to puck which bounced a few feet in front of him, before funny-hopping into the net.
  • A goal that Ward would surely like to remember.

► Plekanec keeps on rolling:

  • Tomas Plekanec picked up another goal on Monday against Carolina, he who now tallies a team-leading eight on the season. Plekanec now has a point in 11 of Montreal’s 15 games this season.

► Peter Budaj ecstatic after shutout victory:

  • Budaj was ecstatic following the win against Carolina and was all smiles for the journalists.

“It’s always a bonus when you get a shutout. I think it’s a great win for us. We’ve got to keep this thing going. The team played great in front of me again. We didn’t allow them much in the first and second. They had a few chances at the end of the second, but I think we played really good defensive hockey. A lot of blocked shots, everybody contributed and we got a big win. We’re trying to play for the logo on the sweater. When you win, everything is going well. I won’t lie, this shutout makes me feel good. I’m excited. We’ve got a tough schedule ahead of us. We’re going to take tonight’s win in, and get back to work tomorrow.”

  • Michel Therrien on the powerplay:

“Thought we were better. Got some chances. Have to give credit to the other team as well.”

  • Therrien on Peter Budaj:

“He played very well. Chemistry of team has been great. Guys know they have to perform better in front of Peter.”

 “We stuck to the plan. Tight game like this, it’s when you learn the most. Good for the confidence of the team, the players.”

  • Therrien on the aggressive system:

“It’s demanding. You always have to pursue the puck well. Guys really buy into that.”
